How often do you unplug from work?

after having spent years on jobs that were essentially 24/7, i am more than happy to be doing shift work. i come in to whatever situation the previous shift left us (usually a mess) and after that is cleaned up we do our job and then whatever didn't get done gets picked up by the next shift and i go home. the problems at work become someone else's problems when it comes time to go home. i come home and eat, sleep, and live life (wife and kids), not my job.

I'm currently working a 24/7 job, been doing it for 3 years now and I can honestly say the Jacksonville trip to the see the Panthers game was the first time in 3 years I shut my phone off and just didn't care. I do trips quite a bit but phones always on and I'm dealing with crap because I'm still responsible for what happens at my place. But unplugging for the first time sort of backfired in the sense that once I came back I realized just how sh*tty it is to be working 24/7 and I've been exhausted ever since, that's probably why I booked my trip to Charlotte for the MNF to hopefully just 'get away' again.

Shift work or just the typical 9-5 job has never seemed more appealing than over the last month. The thought of leaving work every night going home and sleeping with both eyes closed is definitely something I think about way too much. I'm going to try and grind this out for another 3-5 years given I'm only 27 but I definitely envy where you're at right now!

i realized that the freedom you have at a job like that (or your own business) is an illusion. when i was self employed i could go anywhere i wanted and work when i wanted to, but i was never really free from work. and when i did try to free myself, i would pay for it when i got back. i kind of did the same thing when i had an actual 24/7 job. when i was able to get away, i had to del with.  lot more issues when i got back. in both of these situations, it got to a point where when i did manage to get away, stress would still be there because i didn't know what kind of poo i was going to have to deal with when i got back and the drive back from wherever was painfully tense. i am having to work a whole lot right now....9 hour nights, 6 days a week (could be 7 the next few), but it's still much better than what i had to deal with in the past.

Yep! that's exactly how I feel when I go away/on my way home from a trip. It's to the point that going away almost isn't even worth it. I'm trying to not care as much but as you know that's basically impossible to do.

Yeah 9 hour nights 6-7 days a week is definitely a lot and would be tough but like you said, basically anything beats 24/7.

I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late. I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me - and after that I just sorta space out for about an hour. I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual work.
