Did anybody else see this stat about Seattle's O-Line last night?

Speaking about Seattle, and Russell Wilson.

The guys at First Take (both Stephen A, and Skip) just acknowledged something may of us have known for a long time.

They said, Russell Wilson's not a good pocket QB (skip called him subpar). And it's better to keep him in the pocket, instead of allowing him to run outside where he's much more lethal.

They both acknowledge, Wilson can't see over the defense.

Yet Wilson managed to have a nearly perfect QB rating against our eilte defense in the playoffs last season.

I love how the Huddle/Media kicks and screams about a QB that consistently ranks among the best in QB rating year in and year out...but then the claim "Oh, he really isn't that great of a pocket qb." Yet go crazy over Luck because he happens to throw the ball 80,000 times a game. Of course, when Luck leads the league in INTs we get "It's not his fault...his O-line sucks!" This despite the fact that his backup managed to not get hit behind the same line and also managed managed not to turn over the ball.

If Wilson's oline didn't rank as one of the worst in the league, Wilson will pick you apart standing in the pocket. Luckily for us, and the rest of the league, his O-line (and for some time now) is atrocious.

Since when?

Wison's never been a good pocket passer since he's been in the league.

He was actually spoon fed his first two years, and was asked to do very little.

He's good, throwing the ball up on the run though.

So, what are you saying.

So how'd they look? Did you catch the game?

Just checked the stat line: six sacks given up...not so good.

They're OL looked rough, even Russell Okung, which I guess you could attribute to the rest of the line being below average. The Lions were able to make SOME plays, but there were so many other opportunities to make Seattle pay for missed assignments. I believe the Lions were very poor in their angles when Wilson got out of the pocket. He's quick, but you can limit that with your angles and a lot of times the Lions were poor in that aspect. Then you have your typical Russell Wilson plays, he hangs the ball in the air SO MUCH when he's on the move. Would love to see us capitalize on those and have our secondary have a few takeaways. They're there for us.

Russell Wilson is elusive though. They could have had more sack than that. Still, six in one game is amazing.

It's not going to be whether we can get to Russell, it's if we can take him down before he makes a play.

our defense won't be able to if the refs refuse to call holding.

I'll advise you to go back and re-watch Seattle at Atlanta in the 2013 (I think) and our game last year vs. Seattle in Seattle for starters. Both playoffs games BTW.

And I remember doing a statistical analysis of Wilson about a year ago. If you go back and look at Wilson's most productive games...he actual got better the more he was asked to do. His QB rating increased the more the threw the ball. Which, of course, was the exact opposite of the Huddle's favorite QB Luck. There was a negative correlation between high number of pass attempts and Luck's production as measured by QB rating.

Which is to say, don't assume that simply because Wilson ranks low as to pass attempts, that when asked and needed he won't rip your defense apart from the pocket.

Nailed it

Well, with all the holds the offensive line got away with, it's hard to stop him.

Wilson's not a very good or even good pocket QB. He's probably not even average. He's quite poor. Everyone know this. So it's not saying much.

He can't see over the defense. He's not patient in the pocket. He doesn't throw across the field well (though he can throw it up on the run well).  And his first few years, he threw the ball very quickly (as SanFran and Wash did with Kaep and RG3), and relied heavily on his run game and defense.

Willson,  may not rely as much on those things a tad bit. But he's still much more comfortable throwing outside the pocket than in it. He just doesn't look as comfortable in the pocket, though not as bad as RG3 and Kaep.

And please spare me the stats. RG3 and Kaepernick, were supposed to be QB gods, based off their "stats". However, when anyone with a critical eye saw those guys, you knew they were hiding being their systems and schemes for their QB.

I'm not saying Wilson's not a decent to good QB. However, he relies heavily on his defense and a good run to make him look. And he's certainly not a polished pocket passer (never been). And he's certainly not as good in the pocket as Cam (stand back, going through his progressions, making decisions).

don't have to take him down. Force to him to make the crazy throws he's known for. The poo won't fly with our defense.
