Carolina can't buy a win after bye week

This is has been on my mind ever since I knew we were playing Seattle, in Seattle, immediately after our bye week.  Since 2011, under Rivera, we are 0-4 coming off of our bye weeks.  Seattle is vulnerable this year, but as of recent, we always seem to come out flat after our bye weeks.  I've referenced a Nov 2014 article that breaks it down a little more in detail.  However, I will say I liked that Rivera had these guys show up for film today, instead of giving them Victory Monday off.  Let's hope they stay hungry.

I've been hearing this bye week thing mentioned a lot lately.  At first I was thinking that it was more coincidence than substance.  After looking at the actual game scores though, it looks like there is something to this:

2011:  Titans 30 Panthers 3

2012: Cowboys 19 Panthers 14

2013: Panthers 6 Cardinals 22

2014: Panthers 13 Vikings 31

Three out of four of these were not even close.  Hopefully Ron makes some good changes.

Youre missing a game... Playoffs, 2013.... We had a bye being the 2nd seed at 12-4.... Couldnt beat the zebras & the 49ers.........

I decided to look a little more closely at our record following bye weeks.

First it's worth noting that under Rivera & Cam, we've never taken a winning record into a bye week.  (I'm disregarding the Jan 2014 playoff loss / bye as I think the playoff loss is a different category).

  • In 2011 prior to the week 9 bye, we were 2-6, with a 1 game losing streak coming into the bye.  Tennessee was 4 - 4 when we played them.
  • In 2012 prior to the week 6 bye, we were 1 - 4  with a 3 game losing streak.   Dallas was 2 - 3 when we played them.
  • In 2013, we were 1-2 prior to our week 4 bye, coming off a 1 game winning streak (the 38-0 blow out of the Giants).  AZ was 2 - 2 when we played them.
  • In 2014, we were 3 - 7 - 1 prior to our week 12 bye, coming off a 5 game losing streak.   Minnesota was 4 - 7 when we played them.

So, not only did we have a losing record in each case, we also played teams that had better records than we did at the time.

So... this year we're 4 - 0 and we will have a better record than Seattle when we play them, so, I'm really hoping we can break this "the team can't win after a bye" stereotype altogether.  This year is a totally different situation.

We're building a winning culture.  We've started fast.  We've got an 8 game regular season win streak going.  We've held tough to win close games we often would have lost in the past.   No need to keep hanging this expectation of losing following the bye on the team.

Let's expect the win, and let's hope Ron and the team don't start to believe this we can't win after the bye nonsense.  I'm glad they're not being complacent about it, but, it's really not the same situation this year at all.
