The Devin Funchess "drop"

If the ball hits you where that pass hits you, you have to catch it. Slightly behind, but both hands were able to be on that ball. At the NFL level, receivers make that catch ALL the time. He's a rookie who has seen limited snaps and fewer targets. Drops are to be expected. Saying it was a "bad" throw Is patently absurd.

Is it an easier throw to make or an easier catch?  It's easy to say "you have to catch it" but it's even easier to say that Cam has to make that throw.  He's not a rookie, he's an MVP candidate and even non MVP candidates make that throw "ALL the time".  That one got away.

The ball hit him in the hip, in stride. He didn't have to throw his arm away from his momentum to make the catch. He had to open up and drop his hands down a hair. A catch you see WEEKLY in the league. If that throw "got away" then you have an unrealistic idea of how accurate QBs have to be.

Or maybe, just maybe, you are part of the problem with this fan base. Cam Newton has the strongest start to his season, and you focus on every ball that isn't perfectly placed and say "SEE!? He isn't accurate! Told ya! Start DA!"

That's actually not at all what I'm saying.  I'm saying he's an MVP candidate.  I'm saying he's off to arguably his strongest start.  I'm saying he missed a throw.

His accuracy continues to be a question and it's due to his sometimes sloppy footwork, but that's a discussion for a different thread.  Cam missed a throw, simple and plain.

I'm not naive enough to believe that these games mean anything though.  I am looking ahead to Seattle, GB, Arizona, Atlanta, Dallas, etc come playoff time, not Tampa fuging Bay.  Plays like that decide playoff games, championship games.  I want Cam to make that throw when it matters.  So you be a "good fan" and be fuging stoked we beat Tampa Bay and Jacksonville and all the nobodies in the world and I'll be the "bad fan" admitting our MVP QB missed 1 throw.

Stopped when you said "his accuracy continues to be a question".

Cam has proven he has greatly improved his accuracy (which I think is largely a product of actually being healthy for the first time in 4 years). The "bad" throws that are cited? No more than ANY QB in the league. No QB throws a perfect pass every time. No, not even Rodgers. He misses a few each game. Some throws aren't even bad placement. They're purposefully put in a spot where the receiver catches it or it falls incomplete. Cam has MASTERED that technique. Sometimes it's due to lack of ability on the receiver's part (Cotch going down the seam, for instance). Cam hasn't had but a few really off the wall throws this season. I defy you to find them if I am wrong.

If the ball hits you DIRECTLY in BOTH of your hands, in stride, and you're not having to be a ballerina to go up and get it, the throw is not the problem. Was the throw perfect? No, it wasn't. Was it well enough placed that it should have been caught? Yes. Was it an outright drop? No, it was partly a great play by the defender.

I get bent up over this because you act like you know what you're talking about when you display, repeatedly, that you have no idea what you're talking about.

You are pretty mean to a rookie.

It is a bit harsh, but it's not really off point. However, he is just 21 years old. He's one of the younger guys in the league. At his size, he needs to add some muscle and impose himself on opposing secondaries. His ball tracking seems fine, but we have a small sample size. I believe the poster you were quoting was referencing the endzone throw a couple games back. If so, I think that's just a chemistry thing and less of a ball-tracking issue.

I believe Funch will get more reps as the season progresses. He'll have to, because he's our best physical specimen at receiver right now. Big, quick, deceptive speed. Gotta get him some touches and raise his confidence. Make teams respect him so Ginn and Brown are getting more opportunities. Once we have somebody other than Olsen that demands attention, I believe our offense may really take off. But we have to get that first.

lol

If that is in stride, I quit.  There is 5 yards between him and the hash defender yet Cam "placed" it on his back knee so it wouldn't get intercepted, even though it allows the trail defender to make a play on it.  I literally can't even right now.

    • Bad teams with new coaches that want to make a splash with big passing games kill young QBs. Solid teams that can lean on the run and play-action give a chance for QBs fresh out of college to grow and learn how to dictate a game. A lot of these guys, and maybe even Bryce, aren't horrible but they are being asked to go in and be something unrealistic. They are expected to be able to put out raging dumpster fires after being handed a bucket and being told to go find some water.  And I think we see some of these guys who were labeled as busts eventually developing into serviceable, sometimes decent, sometimes quite good QBs when they land at a well-built team with good coaching and a solid identity. Mayfield, and Darnold are two that come to mind right now. And the two Joneses are certainly showing more in Indy and San Fran than they'd ever really shown before. But we're a shoddily built team that has been weakly coached into a softer style of football that puts crazy amounts of pressure on young QBs. Heck, even Andy Dalton with his experience really couldn't sustain any results here.
    • 1. Charlotte has been very good to Smitty and his comment is out of line.  2. XL is Smitty, just 180 degrees out of phase. He is the quintessential anti-Smith. Give 89 the ball and he will win a game for you. His high gear was terrifying and he was fearless. He was the bully on every snap he ever played here.  XL is Mr alligator arms who lives in fear of contact. He gets boxed out by guys he outweighs by 40 pounds and looks generally clueless.  Why he has chosen to defend someone he would have BBQ’ed as a teammate stumps me.
    • Fake outrage from an entertainer... And yes he would have absolutely chewed him out on the field for that kind play.
