Unpopular question, perhaps a stupid thought, but...

I'm not here to pile on, but offer an olive branch to the OP.  I get what you're saying - you want #17 to get more time to develop, and I agree with you there, he's not ready for game action yet, but because we are so thin at WR, he sort of has no choice except this trial by fire.

If KB were healthy, he might be inactive these days.  But he's going to have to learn a little bit more each week, and we're all going to have to be patient with his maturation process.

Now, go have a Fresca.

No, Cotchery is NOT that.  Cotchery proved last year that beside his "cool vet guy" he isn't much of a threat on the field.

He's more of a threat "on the field" than Hakeem Nicks.

Or Denarius Moore.

Or Duron Carter.

Who, 4 weeks into the season, aren't on the field for ANYBODY.

The NY Giants, who know Hakeem Nicks better than anyone in the NFL, tried out receivers this week.  One of those receivers that was trying out was Hakeem Nicks.

The NYG ended up signing Taverres King and not Nicks.

So of all these highly-sought after "veteran" WRs that you think were available, which would you have signed?  And if they're so great, why hasn't anyone else signed them?

I mean you can spin it your way (which is so negative bro, why so glum? we're 4-0). but honestly, Ginn has really stepped up since Benji went down. All those other Vet guys that were out there? They're still out there. No one wants them. There are other teams that need WR help too, the fact they haven't been signed must mean something. Shula's offense doesn't run on playmakers at the WR position, it runs on possession guys, something we have in spades. Surprisingly enough, it seems to be working. I'm not holding my breath and please Get back to me in 4 more weeks after the rough patch in our schedule, but it seems like the personnel we have is exactly who Shula needs in order for his offense to work. It is methodical and it runs through Cam, not through the WRs. Cam is making our WRs look better which is awesome.

Stevie Johnson, James Jones, Crabtree, Shorts, Royal, Douglas, Heyward-Bey, etc.  I didn't expect us to get Andre Johnson or Torrey Smith although that overpay on Torrey may look good right now.  But there was vets to be had or taken a look at, but we swung and missed.

Yeah we've looked OK against scrub teams with this WR core, and I hope it continues, but the real test is soon.

I gotta hand it to the huddle. Y'all sure do know how to make a guy feel like poo for asking a question. Honestly it is invigorating to see.

Didn't you know that the Huddle is full of Retired and Future GMs that know everything about everything.

It is too bad you cannot protect a player or two on the practice squad.   I personally think Funchess will shake off the game day gitters and start playing better.

This should remind everyone how special KB really is.  Rookies don't come in and make an impact like they did last year.

I feel the need by the way to address my mood of topics at times.  This one may seem to be a downer thread even though we are 4-0.  Actually, I was going to post a 4-0 thread discussing how we finally get a chance to know what Patriots fans and Peyton Manning lead teams' fans feel like every year at this time.  Yet, we already have plenty of 4-0 threads, I didn't want to add on.  This thread was more to insight discussion over Funchess, perhaps letting him sit down and catch up on the playbook and get ready to play on Sundays. (though I misunderstood how the practice squad works)

I'm not a downer fan, I don't want to put that reputation out there.  I rep my team often at work.  Heck, I started that unpopular 16-0 thread a week ago or so heehee!  We are 4-0 going on 5-0.

You can't include James Jones on that list because he was never an option. He was going back to the Pack the moment he was cut.

The rest, all signed during the offseason and not after Benji went down. With Benji on the team we all were expecting big things from our receivers this year. Funchess was supposed to come along slowly and develop into our #2, not be thrust into an expanded role out of necessity.

We were in much better shape this offseason with the WR talent we had then we were last year until Benjamin got hurt. There was no reason to bring in any of the guys you listed unless it was at a team friendly rate.

I don't think you read my original post.  I was talking about how Gettleman played the dice and went with only KB and a rag tag group of 3/4/5 receivers and a rookie.  All of the ones I mentioned were available in FA and should have been brought in for a look and possibly signed.   We should have went into the year with KB/#2 vet signed/Funchess (or another rookie)/Ginn/Brown/Cotchery.    By the time KB was hurt, all the options that we should have looked into, were gone.  He didn't prepare, and it bite us in the ass.
