Natural talent or a flash in the pan?

He's going to need to add some weight to be an every down 4-3 DE in the NFL. He reminds me a ton of Bud Dupree, out of Kentucky. At his current size he is really only a pass rush specialist and even then, he won't be able to beat a LT with speed every time. I think he has the frame to do just that, though, and could really be a long term player here if he takes the job very seriously and puts in the work and we have the leadership on defense to help him.

Here is the deal:

TB did not plan for him.  And they probably overlooked him as someone with potential being he was a PS player that got cut.  Would he have looked good had someone had some actual game footage on him?

They likely focused their efforts on containing Jared Allen and our other pro bowlers.

He is also the product of a dominant defense, would he have looked as good in Washinton or TB?  Probably not, they don't have anywhere near the personnel that we do.

He was likely extra motivated on showing TB that they were wrong about him.

But I am happy he played the way he did, I hope we get that type of performance more than once this year!  I just feel like there were reasons we saw what we saw and will need more games to get too excited over him.

This "potentially" could be Getts best UDFA signing ever, if he continues to improve.

I felt something good was up when we signed him straight to the 53, having never heard of him. Now we know why.

Just for the record, I'm pretty certain that whenever a team picks up another team's PS player, the player must be signed to the 53.  You can't merely add them to your Practice Squad.

Yeah, I just mean that it was impressive to me that we would sign a guy I've never heard of, from another team's ps, to fill a spot on our active roster. The action itself was profound to me.

I think the correct answer is that there IS a lot of natural talent, but he's still got to refine his technique because now that opposing O-Lines can study him, he will quickly start looking like just another guy.  And that's something that Allen is going to be huge for.

Yes, it was a pretty bold move, especially since we have Cox on our own PS.  Definitely came out of the blue.  Good job by G'man and our scouts to keep track of a player they obviously had interest in from the draft.

In perspective:

CJohnson; in his first 19 games (2007-8) he had 21 tackles and six sacks.

GHardy: in his first 15 games (2010) he had 24 tackles and three sacks.

BDelhaire: in his first game he had 5 solo tackles and two sacks.

Johnson averaged slightly over 1 tackle per game and about one sack every three games

Hardy averaged about 1.5 tackles per game and one sack every five games

In fairness, Delhaire was going against a rookie he was probably very familiar with, but that goes both ways.  Additionally, Delhaire was with his third defense in about as many months.
