Update: MKG Out 6 months with Reported Torn Labrum

MKG is out 6 months per Woj.

Well I guess debating if Batum can play 2 is pretty worthless now since he'll be the 3 for a lot of the year. Lamb will probably take his starting spot and it will give us more shooting, if you're trying to look for positives. MKG was really smart to take that extension, in hindsight.

Season's off to a great start lol...

Also, local radio here in Raleigh was saying "he should be back in time for the playoffs..."

No.

That is a horrible idea.  I'm also worried about his shooting coming back off this injury, so imo, may as well let him sit the season out, rehab, and come back next season.   If we make the playoffs, which I think we will (I'm projecting 4 or 5 seed), I don't want to mess with whatever chemistry we will develop by the time MKG would be ready to come back.

Also, I was finally starting to come around to MKG after years of ripping him...  But these injuries are ultimately negating any progress he has made developmentally because he can't even make it to the floor.  I liked the extension when we signed him to it, but this automatically makes it a bad deal.

What should happen:

Trade Al, Batum to a contender at the deadline. Get some good assets. Go for the youth movement. Lamb should see a lot of minutes. Decide if he has a future on this team as a shooting guard. If not, deal him as he's also expiring.

What will happen:

They will try their darndest to sign Batum to an extension because they sold the farm for him. They won't have the depth or defense to get to the playoffs. They will wind up picking 9th. Al probably gets re-signed. Clifford probably gets fired a la Fox getting blamed for all the problems with the 2010 Panthers.

Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

Basically.  This team wasn't going to be very good anyway. 6th seed in the East at best maybe?  Blow it up this year, or keep striving for mediocrity.

I don't see it that way guys.  Even without MKG, I think this team is a 4 or 5 seed as is.  Our biggest problem since this second incarnation of charlotte pro basketball has been lack of outside shooting.  It has been the one consistent every season since our inception.  We finally have that, and it will make a huge difference.

And despite my protests, Frank appears to be a great pick.

The piece I agree with you on CB, is dealing Al.  While offensively I feel he fits well by giving us a legitimate 4-out look, he is a walking minus due to defensive limitations (read: absolute inability to play defense).  For the long term, he has to be moved.  He is not a franchise player, and I certainly hope our FO doesn't make the mistake of thinking he is and re-sign him.

Imo, we have enough young pieces that trading Al for more assets, be it picks or players, would only make us better, not worse.

We might have it worse out of all fanbases.

There's no "might" about it. In terms of luck, management, and success you'd be hard pressed to find a worse option.

The thing is, even when they get it right, it somehow turns out the worst way possible.

Tank for Davis? Finish 2nd to the franchise stolen away from you in the first place. Oh, and Davis is the only franchise player worth having in the draft.

Sign Lance Stephenson to a steal of a deal? He somehow forgets how to play basketball.

Draft BPA in Vonleh and PJ? Vonleh looks like he's never played basketball before and PJ punches a high schooler a week after we draft him.

Sign MKG to a reasonable extension? He gets hurt in the first preseason game.

Mind you, this is just in the last 3 or 4 seasons! Just think of the possibilities if you go back to 2004, or 1988, even!

    • Really?  Back to this again? How many times have I said that I’d prefer to trade back from #1? Too many to count, but as I’ve pointed out, that’s going to be much easier said than done, as once we signal we want to trade back, teams will know we don’t want any of the QBs and they’d target the 2nd pick in a trade instead. All of my “T-Mac at #1” talk has been discussed under two circumstances… the first being that no QB or DE pop before the draft, and that we can’t trade back. But again, I know you don’t like to actually read that stuff when I say it, as I’ve said it numerous times.
    • Thanks for posting this. While this was far from a great performance, this critique shows what some of us noticed last week. Bryce played "a little better". There is some talent there. But, as you pointed out we really don't have a great pass blocking line for dropping back each down when we are behind. BY has got some bad habits and physical limitations. At times his teammates let him down. The play calling isn't always the best. I hope he can learn from last week and show us some improvement in the Saints game.
    • Oh, and yes, I’d take a WR first in this upcoming draft, but again, that’s not in a vacuum I wouldn’t have taken him over the QBs this past year or likely the ones next year either. It’s all relative to who is available in a specific draft, and I don’t think any of the QB’s are worth the risk at #1 this year. Also the fact that you’ve said you would take T-Mac #2 but scoff at him going #1 is just in itself, super weird.  How you can justify a player at #2 but not #1 solely because of their position and with complete disregard to the other players available, is absolutely crazy town talk
