KB and Kuechly and the heights of player worship in the NFL.

:::Disclaimer::: Calm down, this is NOT a KB/Kuechly bashing thread.. As NBA season approaches (my 2nd favorite sport, go Hornets!) I have been thinking how fascinating it is the difference between the two sports and I came to the conclusion that the biggest difference between the two sports is Basketball is more of a talent driven player game while the NFL is more of a skill/scheme team driven game. I think in recent years, the NFL has seen an unprecedented amount of player worship. 

We hear it year after year. Things like how the Dolphins are suddenly contenders because they signed the great and mighty Suh, or how Calvin Johnson will be the greatest WR since Rice and how he is nearly god like. How does this relate to us as Panther fans?! Im going to go ahead and say it, I think us as fans are GREATLY over estimating just how big of an impact one or two really good players actually have.

I cant remember who brought it up in another thread.. But if someone told you at the start of the year that for the first three games we would be missing three of our past 1st rounders in Star, KB and Luke to start the season, would you have dreamed in a million years we would be sitting at 3-0 being withiout BOTH KB and Luke?! Unheard of. Now you can make the argument our 1st three opponents are below mediocre, that might be a valid argument for a different day.

The bottom line is that yes while guys like KB and Keek are impact players, a huge reason for a team's success in the NFL is SO many factors, there are so many moving parts in the NFL and what it takes to win in the NFL that its almost incomprehensible. The NBA is a completely different ball game both literally and figuratively, the NBA is a player driven league, you can have the best coach and scheme in the world, but you lose a guy like Steph or Lebron, its lights out. The good news is that success in the NFL is more relied upon coaching, schemes and philosphy and for now, the Panthers seem to have that in spades.

nice post.

there's no question the nfl is structure-oriented in that the talent behind schemes often transcends the talent of the individual player playing in it. also, the fact that so much weight is placed on the quarterback in today's league means that for the majority of positions, the loss of a single talent - spectacular or not - can be pretty easily schemed around. we're seeing the panthers (shula, even!) do this with success.

if your quarterback goes down, though? god rest your soul. no scheme in the world can truly save you there.

Frankly, I want Luke back as much as the next guy but its almost scary seeing some with this obsession over him, yes he is an amazing player, but we have Klein, Sean Mcd and now Jared Allen, oh yea and Star is back.. We are going to be fine, i promise.

As I have mentioned before, Cowboys went 12-4 without Sean Lee and they sure as hell didnt have the luxury of having a AJ Klein step up.
