Texans Blog Praises Panthers

Yep, and agree with that last line.  Despite putting the Panthers in cap hell, dumb contracts, etc ... Hurney did also give us some of our core, Especially drafting Cam!!  So nice to finally have a franchise quarterback.

A lot of credit should go to our scouts, who have served both Hurney and Gettleman.  Yes, he made stupid choices around contracts at the end, but for nearly his entire tenure Hurney was an above average drafter.  And now Gettleman looks like a freaking genius--he never did this well in NY.  A TON of credit for both of their successes should go to the anonymous guys that scour the college and pro landscapes for talent.

I also think that JR has a good hand in the defense-first philosophy that makes us all crazy because of guys like Shula, but which also lends a lot of consistency to our franchise.

Anybody that thinks Norwell is merely adequate has not watched him play. Remmers is actually pretty solid for that matter. I couldn't give a rat's ass how they got into the league.

Right now our pass protection is well above average and our run blocking is below average. Overall, our line is around league average. That's a hell of an improvement since last year.

I thought that too.  Just curious, did you read the whole article that was posted?  It talks about keeping guys in for more protection and the blocking schemes in general.  I agree the line is playing much better than last year but some of that is scheme adjustments too.  It's a pretty good piece.  I certainly learned a decent amount about our blocking schemes.

"Norwell pulls without a problem. The hole is already wide open for him.  When Cam hits the hole, he runs into a problem. Norwell lets the linebacker cut across his face. He doesn't hit him square on, and as a result, the drain gets clogged. Tolbert, on the other hand, does a nice job kicking out his man.  Newton lowers his head, makes contact, and rolls forward short of the first.

This play should be a first down and maybe a touchdown. If Norwell clears out the linebacker and Newton gets through unscathed, he is just a free safety miss away from scoring. Instead, the Panthers successfully convert on fourth down and Jericho Cotchery catches a touchdown that never occurred in a reality where Norwell makes his block. "

I think the author only watched the first two games this year, so his sample size is limited.  I wouldn't discount the article just because of the adjective choice in the summary.

I love this article. It says what I have said all along. The issue with our offense is execution and mediocre talent at many positions. But the scheme and play calling is much better than people give Shula credit for. Most times when we mess up it is execution and not play calling that is the issue. And now you have it from an objective source who apparently knows what he is talking about.

now you know why Shula isn't going anywhere.  LOL.

You are right. The worst part is that there are tons of posters on this site just waiting for a bad offensive effort to start all the Shula hate posts all over again.  You have to suffer through hundreds of stupid posts talking about 10 to 15 years ago as if it mattered today. Even some of the folks with supposedly the best knowledge  here are caught up with the Shuls hate.

I honestly have come to believe that it is a matter of how much alcohol consumption there is during the game.
