Training Masks....

absolute rubbish

altitudes increase respiratory capacity by way of less pressure pushing air into the lungs per breath. Each breath needs more air to get the same amount of oxygen compared to sea level, which gives them a better advantage when they train at lower altitudes.

masks do not mimic this, they just inhibit the amount of air taken in per breath. now your stud athletes from the himalayans or whatever has grown up in a low air pressure environment and has adapted over years and years. You wearing a gay little mask while you hop on the elliptical and watch fox news does absolutely nothing except decrease the air you're breathing in and diminish the intensity of your workout, if your workout had any intensity, which it doesn't.

Decreasing the amount of air you breath in per breath is going to do nothing to your habit of breathing through your mouth, or holding your breath. You wasted your money on gay internet poo and are trying to defend it here.

stop spreading lies. you have no idea at all what you're talking about.

after reading this makes me want to buy one, why? Lol

I have one and did a lot of research before I bought it. What I found was there was no substantial evidence to support the claim that it improves lung capacity. I would say for certain it doesn't simulate high altitude training. If you are breathing 20.9% 02,  that's what you are breathing ... through a mask or not. A mask can not simulate the physiological changes your body undergoes when breathing air with a lower 02 content due to elevation.

I will say however that I believe there are benifits to training with the mask. Much like the benifits you get from doing long breath holds during underwater laps.

There isn't really a competitive advantage for old guys like me but for professionals it may give just a slight edge in a sport that is so highly competitive. Maybe even a mental edge.

No expert here just my 2.

I coached swimming for 30 years and have worked with US National teams in Colorado Springs before. This looks like something that restricts air flow not unlike snorkles in swimming. The physiological benifit of resrticted air flow comes by working the muscles used to inhale. Sort of like weight lifting for your lungs.

Ah yes, a condescending know-it-all. Sorry, but your little response provided no insight whatsoever. I recorded my own personal data and I tested it myself for a strict six months. My results were that of improvement. Don't believe me? Cool story bro. Don't like it? Don't give a poo.

lol so for six months you were monitoring your lactic acid levels and vo2max while eliminating other factors?

I have a lovely rock that keeps tigers away.

I havent attempted to figure out the science behind the mask, but to me, i would think it serves a similar purpose as a weighted vest or those weights that you put on the end of a baseball bat while youre taking practice swings.  If you practice under harsher conditions, then the actual game seems a little easier.  Is there no validity to that?

Considering that I live in FL and there's no mountains here, and yet I was able run 1.6 miles more at Big Bear two months ago compared to my pervious performance there (which was nine months ago) and the improvements in my breathing patterns are significant ... I say 'meh' to your response.

But please continue pretending to be an airchair medical professional and citing that my results are poo.

The training effect is to condition the core muscles that you use to pull air into your lungs.

At altitude you will take more breaths to get the same amount of 02 to the blood stream. It does nothing to simulate altitude training. That is a marketing ploy.

No you don't take more breaths for the same amount of oxygen. I'm at 6000' right now and it's still 20.9% oxygen. I've already covered this but no one fuging reads.

So you trained and had improvement over 9 months. Why do you think this wouldn't have happened without the mask?
