Random but we worked out three punters today

Nortman can boom the ball, but his inability to angle kicks is pissing me off.  I guarantee you he has been instructed to kick away from dangerous returners (like last week), yet he failed to do so.  He also punted away from the coverage.  Just because a punter can kick far doesn't mean he is doing his job.

I dont know for sure, but has he had these problems in the past? I am in S. Korea and wasnt at the game, but it sure seemed to be pretty darn wet/misty/rainy on Sunday. Unless it is a pattern with him, perhaps the weather had something to do with the angle?

Believe it or not, teams (well, at least good teams) are already planning ahead to the upcoming offseason and figuring out who gets invited to camp.

Tuesdays are days off for the current team and the only day the field is reliably available for the front office to look at next year's prospects.

Rivera mentioned that punt return on his radio interview on Sitius XM today. Blamed the return on the punter kicking it too far. Said the returner had 13 yards to make the first guy miss. Maybe they are looking for someone who is better at controlling the ball with less leg strength.

He also mentioned that you are pretty much allowed to double the gunners and there are no holding calls on them.

A 40 yard high kick with a fair catch might be better than a 60 yard boomer with our coverage history the past few years.

Ronde explained this quite good, the gunners are tied after the called back punt so that is the main reason for the extra room. So yes, Nortman should have adjusted for that.

I like Nortman, but he has never been good at angle kicking.  Some punters are good at it, some aren't.  With a good special teams unit it really doesn't matter.  Our coverage team has always been bad during Nortman's tenure (something he cannot control), so any flaws he has will show up more.

In reality, our coverage unit it the real problem.

Still amazed at the pure disinterest and indifference towards the WR position by Gettleman.

That being said, for those of you asking "WTF?" in regards to working out punters - I think it's perfectly possible that this was a "wake up call" for Nortman.  We don't know what he was asked to do, but Ronde Barber even said during the game that Nortman was at fault for Murphy's punt return for TD.  I was wondering during the game, after seeing how explosive Murphy had looked early, why would we punt directly to him, in the middle of the field, with plenty of room to return...  especially with our lackluster ST coverage.  He kicked away from his coverage, and then flailed horribly without even making a legitimate effort at slowing Murphy down during the return.

I think it's entirely possible that this was a gut check for Nortman.
