Bears looking to trade Alshon???

You don't get something for "nothing" unless  you're  talking players still playing on their first contract.  At some point all the team building has to lead to something.  You have to swing for the fences at some point.  You just can't keep being "cheap" and expect to win championships.  Sometimes you have to pay fair market value for a quality player to give yourself a good look to stand atop the apex of the mountain.

Mind you,  I didn't say overpay,  I said pay to run with the big dogs.  Whether or not Gman thinks that AJ would bring that type of value is anyone's guess. The thought of a young,  tall receiver with good hands and play making ability isn't a bad thought by any means. I have a difficult time believing that Gman is really interested in a move like this though,  unless he thinks we have a genuine shot to get over the hump THIS season.

And we were a team with a losing record that hadn't sniffed the playoffs in years.

The 49ers have at least five good player on roster too. Heck, most teams do.

If you think that's all it takes...welp.

It's not all it takes, and I haven't discredited the pieces he's brought in. I don't hate Gettleman, I just don't like when people praise him and tear down Hurney. Why can't we just be happy with Gettleman and be thankful for the core that Hurney gave us? I do believe releasing Steve Smith was a monumental dumb move and his current play backs that up, but outside of that I'm happy with the work Gettleman is doing. I wish he showed more urgency on the offensive side of the ball, but hey you're bound to be disappointed about some things. I praised him for stepping up and drafting Funchess, and I know it isn't his fault KB got hurt. I think moves could have been made there, but all in all I'm ok with this team. I just know at some point or lack of playmakers at the WR position is going to hurt us.

That's a respectable opinion

Why do we have to tear down Byron Bell?  Can't we just be thankful that he tried really hard?

(Ace logic)

A general manager builds a team, not just a core. The team Hurney built was 16 million over the cap and still a perennial loser. Players were complacent because they knew they were gonna get paid regardless.

That's different now.

Oh,  Ace...  Again with this? Yes we had a great core. But surrounding that core was a ton of  bad poo and overpriced poo.  Gettleman has wiped pretty much all that away and gotten us in a much better situation than we were in before he got here

I don't disagree with that, but from a player stand point I feel like he walked into a good situation. Think of where we would be if he had to go out and find a QB with everything else.

And it's easier to build that team when you already have a franchise QB is all I'm saying.

monolithic narratives seldom reflect reality. the truth is hurney wasn't as awful as people make him out to be, but the truth is also that big picks (luke, cam) aren't always genius moves if they're the obvious pick that your team's suckage allowed you to draft. hurney had his moments, but he didn't have enough of them.

gettleman walked into a situation profoundly handicapped in some senses and deeply fulfilled in others. he leaned on the latter to clean up the former.

all narratives should consider both poles instead of galvanizing two opinions that are not mutually exclusive.

also mr scot has gotten condescending af
