Do we start Allen this week?

you may be right, but the fact that we traded draft picks for a guy on another team midway through the season in a gettleman system shows how desperately they acknowledge the lack of talent behind charles johnson on that team, especially on a team where luke and TD are banged up.

the raw talent he brings to the position far outweighs any assignments he may miss here and there because he's not fully literate in our system.

also, since this was transacted on a monday and he jumped straight on a plane, he's probably sitting at somebody's apartment studying the new playbook and some signals, and he'll get practice time all week to focus on building chemistry and learning calls with a new line.

it's not like we picked some scrub up on thursday after dinner

I was going to posts very similar thoughts to both of these.

Regardless.....the guy is going to play a lot either way.

Is he going to start like on the first play of the game which is normally a running down? Probably not. Since he's 33, it's crazy to play him every snap on defense and get the old guy burned out too early in the game. Ealy and Horton will be the "starters" to defend more run plays, with Addison and Allen rotating in to defend more passing plays.

BTW, we have Jared under contract until March of 2018....this wasn't a 1 year rental deal, PLUS it just gave us leverage to re-negotiate CJ's contract next off-season to free up some money for J_No24

Lol learn the playbook?! When the opposing QB gets the ball, bring the pain.. There, playbook mastered.

Well, I hope they don't ever run the ball then.  My guess is he will be used situationally at first.  No way he has mastered the entire playbook.  He certainly knows what to do, but there are things he has to learn in our system to play every down.  I don't think Rivera is going to limit our blitz game plan just for one player.

You make it sound like he just started a new position at a company doing IT work.  Oh just let him make his self comfortable and have coffee and doughnuts and mingle with his fellow coworkers for a couple of weeks before we give him his assignment.

you know, not everything has to be football related. fug the family and everything he currently has going on in chicago etc and rush down to carolina, take his physical and be ready to play down 1 sunday? cmon, its just not that simple. if it happens great, I just dont expect him to.

I think we need to temper expectations a bit but this was a very solid move and very cheap.

Is there any reason I can't have high expectations?

I promise I won't cry if my expectations aren't met.

Some people would, which is why they live in a puddle of pessimism.  They just can't handle disappointment. Hard for them to move on.

I promise I can handle the pressure though if its OK with you.  :P

I went to the bears board and the majority said he has been poo for two years and slow, happy he is gone. There is a you tube video where he is mic ed up check it out. He is very vocal on the field his rush looks good off the line but he did look slow in coverage.

I think he will thrive being in our top defense. In Chicago they were trying to put a round peg in a square  hole using him as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Iam tempering expectation but i would not be surprised to see him produce big time here.

To be fair, he asked to be traded out of Chicago. It wasn't the Bears coming to him out of the blue saying, "Hey Jared you need to pack a bag and get on a plane to Charlotte like now. Thanks. Bye!"

If we had better options I could see your point but this isn't a depth move its a desperate move.  They need a body now.  For what it's worth I will feel about this small if he doesn't play the majority of the game Sunday.

Of course he would be poo in a 3-4. I don't give a damn what they say. We need his 10 plus sack production that he regularly put up before last season.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
