Do we start Allen this week?

DE is DE on every team. Nothing to learn. Go get the QB and make tackles. He's one of the best DEs of all time. He will be starting immediately

I hope you are joking.  The Panthers run quite a few zone blitzes with CJ and even Addison.  In those situations they have responsibilities for players going out in patterns.  You don't just "Go get the QB".  There are a lot of subtleties that are different on every defense.  That being said, I expect Allen will at least see some playing time on passing situations.

that's how this is a question. Ive come to the conclusion he will be in rotation this week. Learning our entire scheme isn't as hard for a DE as say a S or LB, but It still will take more than 3 practices to feel accustomed, not to mention he has been trying to play OLB in the 3-4 for the past 6 months. The BYE is coming at a perfect time for Allen, I expect to hear his name come week 6, Hes a smart guy.

you may be right, but the fact that we traded draft picks for a guy on another team midway through the season in a gettleman system shows how desperately they acknowledge the lack of talent behind charles johnson on that team, especially on a team where luke and TD are banged up.

the raw talent he brings to the position far outweighs any assignments he may miss here and there because he's not fully literate in our system.

also, since this was transacted on a monday and he jumped straight on a plane, he's probably sitting at somebody's apartment studying the new playbook and some signals, and he'll get practice time all week to focus on building chemistry and learning calls with a new line.

it's not like we picked some scrub up on thursday after dinner

I dont think he does, I think hes first game is against seattle, after the bye week to get him acclimated.

You make it sound like he just started a new position at a company doing IT work.  Oh just let him make his self comfortable and have coffee and doughnuts and mingle with his fellow coworkers for a couple of weeks before we give him his assignment.

Jared Allen is one of the greatest pass rushers of all-time and has been in the NFL since 2004.  It isn't like defensive end is a complicated position schematically and I doubt there is much, if any, terminology you can throw at Allen that he wouldn't be familiar with.  I find it very unlikely he doesn't play Sunday.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
