Heck no.  14 million a year?  You pay that for a man to man elite CB...like a Revis.

Our scheme is huge in this.

Norman looks like a nice player currently. That's it.  You think we would have learned our lesson about paying big money for things that are just good.

I agree with not tagging, that's too much.  I think Norman is more than "just good" though.  He mirrored Hopkins the whole game, purposefully, and played a lot of man coverage.  It wasn't just our scheme playing into it.  I believe we're going to see quite a bit of that this season, because he's good enough to do that, which is quite a bit better than just good.  I'm not saying great, but damn good.

He's not getting a top CB contract IMO.  I don't think Gettleman puts that much stock in the secondary, which is all well and good, as long as he maintains a great front.  I'd like to keep Norman as much as anyone else, but not at the cost of losing guys like Star, KK, a top DE, or our LB's.  That's where Gettleman likes to live anyway.

With a guy like Norman, I don't understand why you wouldn't offer him a little more than you were willing to before the season, versus waiting til he gets in the season and now he likely will require even more than you would have paid with that higher offer anyway?

Because  leading up to this season, he hadn't put together a season (in DG's estimation, I'm guessing) worthy of the price he wants. This is his "prove it" year

With Luke and Cam, they were dominant from the get-go, so those were no-brainer extension. Norman took a little bit more time to reach his potential, but he's there.

I think if he keeps this up he will be priority number one in the offseason and will get re-signed without any fuss.

If shutting down

Julio Jones twice

Colston

Evans/Jackson

Josh Gordon

Hopkins

is not considered elite than I don't know what this young man needs to do?

I think scheme and defenses need to be recognized is all....

Norman actually gets lots of help in shutting down these guys.   That doesn't take away credit from him bc he is finally playing well in the scheme.

He isn't Nnamdi back in the Oak days playing man all day with no help. Norman largely is playing zone with over the top help....our scheme is all about limiting big plays.

I don't mind paying him some money.  He ain't worth 14 million a year in this defense.  Gotta look big picture IMO.

Thank the front seven.

Norman is great in our system and for that reason I think we should and will keep him around, but I could definitely see him being another Byron Maxwell if he goes somewhere else.

There's the other side of the coin where you can let him walk, pick up a nice comp pick, and make corner back a priority in the draft. Bene is no slouch.

That Rivera scheme and D sure made Cason and White look damn good last year, huh?

if you suck and don't do your job within the scheme....anyone will look bad.  Look at Norman when he first got into Rivera's scheme.

check out Rivera's SD days....he didn't have the best D in the NFL then b/c of talent like the Hawks.

like I said, Norman gets credit.  But you can't tag him....not in this defense.  14 million would be way too much given what we do on D.

I liked Gamble a lot but I am willing to stand behind my comments that Josh Norman is the best Carolina Panther CB in our 20 years in the league

You may be right.. but you sure you don't want to give it a minute?  I mean he hasn't even started a full season yet.

Yall do realize our front 7 has not been that good so far right? They also  dropped off last year and we're only dominant against teams  terrible in the trenches injuries or not. "Falcons,  saints". I will give 2013 but Norman and the secondary have improved since last year and deserve more credit.

Norman is playing good.

Our scheme and D has a lot to do with it....Rivera too.  A lot of his almost plays aren't lock down coverage but zone schemes working.

plus our D gives him lots of help not just in pass rush but over the top.

All that said, I'd like to keep him for a good price.  If he wants elite CB money let him walk. Don't need to pay that.

You just can't give him his full credit can you.

Hopkins is a stud and 24 was matched up with him man to man quite a bit and took him out of the game.  He did a great job sniffing out that screen pass.  Give the guy his just due.

I agree but this team is not being run by Hurney anymore.  Big Dave don't mess around when it comes to contracts.  If he signs Norman then great, but if he lets him walk I won't lose any sleep over it.   When you draft well you don't have to over pay to have talent on the team.  There's always a limit to how many guys you can "pay" and it will be interesting to see who Big Dave decides to pay.  My gut says Norman will be playing elsewhere.
