Damiere Byrd cut from PS: OT Pierce Burton signed to PS

FYI: To anyone thinking of having the "he'll go somewhere else and be a star" meltdown that all too often happens when we let somebody go, just remember that he was only on our practice squad. Any other team could have signed him to their regular roster if they wanted to. Nobody tried

You think logic will stop the crazies from freaking out?

Well they haven't yet, so I'm holding out hope.

Moral of the story... small fast guy who can't catch punts is expendable. Wish him luck.

Byrd has proven that he could run really fast.  Unfortunately, he hasn't proven that he can reliably get open and catch a pass or take a punt back for a big gain.

This is why I always shake my head when people go nuts over a super speed guy with suspect hands/football skills.  I'm sure Usain Bolt could outrun every defensive back in the league, but I'm not signing him to play receiver.

Everyone on the Practice Squad is a free agent, able to sign with anyone at anytime, so letting someone go really has 0 effect on someone else "snatching them up." Well, I'd actually argue that Byrd is now less likely to sign elsewhere given that teams have seen him lose his spot on a team with bad receivers.

I mentioned it when Byndom was let go too: Byrd had been with us awhile and we've seen what he's capable of, if we need him we can always bring him back, but until then we can use those practice squad spots to kick the tires on new guys and get them acquainted with our system.

This Burton guy may have some potential.  He was a pretty good RT at Ole Miss, and was on the Falcons practice squad.  He was cut when they signed Jake Long.  He is not a complete bum....he is just young and inexperienced.  I think he actually had a pretty good preseason.

To be honest he really didn't get much of a chance in preseason. No one really knows if he is good or not. I'm guessing he is not great because of our need at WR.
