Norwood Timetable

I don't know why you think he's dumb. Or didn't get a bachelors degree in 3 years. Or is known to have kept the millions he's made well.

Just goes back to the irrational disdain some people have out there for former players.

We didn't even draft Bersin, and people have been trashing him since his name first appeared.

Then why bring him in?  If the concern for activating Bersin is sending someone back down, why not send Norwood down to the PS?  Bersin brings immediate help.

Other teams can sign players off our practice squad at any time (except if they are playing us that week) so it doesn't make sense to give up a draft pick for Norwood then send him to PS and risk losing him

Dude, read the original post I made, if it's taken seriously then I must have irrational disdain for every player

I don't hate Armanti, nor do I actually think he works at Burger King

I know he's saved his money well enough to work at Costco

This is the closest thing that we have to a certain timetable (which really doesn't answer anything specifically).

Panthers coach Ron Rivera

Are there expectations for Norwood to earn a spot immediately?

“He comes out, flashes, does some really good things, he may earn it right away. Or it could be a period of time. It’s tough on him cause he’s going to have to learn an awful lot in the next day and a half before he gets to the football game, but he’s a smart player … He’s really sharp. He understands offensive football. He was in a good system coming out of college so we feel he’ll assimilate very nicely to us.”

We will just have to wait and see. If he is as sharp as Ron RIvera (and Gman) believe that he is, then I would say we will see him sooner rather than later, especially if our corps can't do any better than they did against the Jags.

Also, don't forget that Norwood is seemingly adept at helping his QB out when the QB gets in trouble (which Cam probably will from the looks of the first game).  His scouting reports specifically mentioned that Norwood seems to excel at this under-appreciated characteristic. This should bode well for him being introduced into the regular game plan sooner rather than later as well.

I thought it was a conditional draft pick.  Even if that is so, why make that trade anyway?  We are probably going after a receiver in next year's draft anyway, so it doesn't make any sense to sign one that won't have the playbook down until halfway through the season when we have a guy on the roster that has played and been successful in a limited role already.  It's just a head scratcher is all.  I'm sick and tired of us signing players that don't do poo, and we all swoon over their "potential" for years and years á la Brandon Williams.  Play them or release/trade them.  It's just annoying.

It was conditional, but as thin as we are at WR, we aren't releasing him to get that pick back. My opinion is Gettleman traded for Norwood because of his long-term potential as our #2/#3 WR since he's a 2nd year player on his rookie deal that we can keep until the 2017-2018 offseason. Yeah it sucks that he didn't come in right away and have our playbook, language, hot reads, and blocking assignments down in 1 day, but he'll get there. We can win every game we play this year with our defense as it is and the offense not screwing it up. I don't like it, either, but yelling at God for tearing Benji's ACL ain't helping anything. And then going into next year's draft we'll say Damn we're set at WR with Benji, Funch, and Norwood as the #1-3 WR and all will be under contract until 2017-2018.

I get what you're saying.  And we seem to be splitting hairs.  The lone argument here is another team snapping him up.  To me, the potential risk of losing him from the PS is the reciprocal of him potentially being our number 3 NEXT year.  It's all equivalent conjecture.  Meanwhile, tangible results are waiting on the PS.  Look what happened with our RB situation:  Patriots snap one draft pick up (that wasn't going to contribute that year anyway) and we go out and get 3 more solid running backs, having to release one.
