9 Guys in the Box

And the circle always comes back around to "it's Cam's fault".

QED.

Sometimes it is. Thats a reality for every QB in the game. Hes not actually infallible.

Im not saying it was in this case.....not commenying on fault at all here. However a basic observation should be that the offense calls a play and the defense does its best to contereact it with the current personell on the field. In football the defense doesnt line up first. Thats pretty obvious.

No, its worse than that.  Norman doesn't have a fifty year option.  That option is only for 1st round draft picks.

Our only choices with regard to Norman after this season is over is to franchise tag him, limited franchise tag him, re-sign him to a long-term contract or release him to be a free agent.

Of the options that keep him on the team, none are going to be cheap.

We are totally misunderstanding each other. lol. I thought you meant that because Floyd has a high cap number next year, it could hinder us in re-signing Norman. Norman doesn't have a fifth year option, Floyd does, and it's already been exercised. So he's not a one year rental.

Perfect summation of the Shula offensive philosophy. We're going to "do what we do" regardless of what the defense is doing. The read option is not a bad offensive tool, but this reliance on misdirection will not work. We're basically hoping that 2 defenders will bite on the fake horribly and not be able to recover. For the read option to be successful, our OL have to win their one-on-one's and then that allows Cam to read ONE defender to decide whether to give or keep the ball. In my opinion, for this style of offense to work, ESPECIALLY with defense loading 9 in the box, you have to beat the Defense with the pass game (slants, TE work, etc.) to make the defense a step slow and maybe widen out a bit.

Until we figure out a way to get the ball to our receivers consistently (and unless it's #88, I don't think teams will ever really respect our ability to do that), we're going to see 9 in the box and misdirection isn't going to block 2 NFL defenders very often.

First of all that philosophy is not at all what we do.  We call a play based on down and distance and what the defense typically does in that situation based on film work.  Once the offense goes up to the line it is Cam who reads the defense and decides whether to run it as called, adjust it slightly, or change it completely.  The microphone to Cam cuts off so that Shula has little control over what Cam does once the tams goes up to the line.

And no the read option doesnt require the Oline to win all the matchups.  just the matchups to the side where we are optioning.  The read option typically involved reading the DE who is often unblocked and then keeping or handing off based on whether he contains or crashes.  But read options can option off the tackle or an ILB depending on whether we are going against a 4-3 or 3-4.

I do agree that you beat the loaded box with the passing game but it isnt slants or quickhitters which is throwing into the teeth of the defense.  Instead you throw over the top to the guy who will be single covered, you use seam routes to the tight end over the top of the safeties or you go to four wides or overloads to one side or the other which forces a safety into coverage.

As for misdirection, there are all kinds of misdirection plays which do work very well and every team relies on them.  The key to misdirection is getting the flow going one direction and going the other way.  That does take time and doesn't work when your o line gets blown up.  Then again no play works when your O line gets blown up unless it is a screen and planned that way.

Brockel or Chandler

With Daryl out for 4 weeks, we're already really thin at OT.   We have Chandler, Silatolu & Scott as backups, and Chandler is apparently still injured.  If you cut Chandler that would leave us with 7 linemen.  No way it's happening. If anything with Williams injury, if Chandler is not playing soon we're going to be needing to ADD an Oline guy to our 53 man roster.

The play is called before the defense lines up, how is he supposed to know what the defense is going to do? Cam should have called an audible.

Lol that's what a play caller does.  He predicts and adjusts.  Cam can't audible if there is no audible.
