Hmmmm. You are absolutely right, no one would do that!...But then again. Thinking a little bit more about it, there might actualy exist one genius stupid enough to do this. I'm thinking of the OC who gave this comment to David Newton, ESPN in the preseason :

""I'd probably be more worried if we had scored on every drive"

How about thinking more.  Then you might realize that having early success in the preseason and scoring all the time can hurt you when your offense becomes overconfident and thinks they are much better than they actually are typically because the opponent isnt gameplanning.  So you become complacent and dont put in the hard work. On the other hand if you struggle then it grounds everyone to work harder and put in extra effort instead of coasting because you think you dont need to do any work.  Since the preseason doesnt count for anything being too successful might make the fans happy but the coaches know better than to trust that everything is going to be that easy once the season starts. Most folks who have coached at any level knows that early success in games that dont count like scrimmages can be a double edge sword and that is what he was referring to.  Some confidence is good but too much can dull your edge particularly when things get tough.

I've disliked Shula for the longest time but I thought he called a very good game. The players just didn't take advantage of the opportunities.

1st Drive: 14 play drive 5:47 possession: From the 30 to the 4 and if not for a bs penalty it would have been a TD.

2nd Drive: 3 and out. Funchess dropped 2nd down pass and Ginn dropped a 3rd down pass that would have been a TD. Still had a chance for pts but Gano missed the long field goal.

3rd Drive: 3 and out. This was the BS spot on the QB sneak by Cam where the official started past the line and kept moving back until we didn't have the 1st down.

4th Drive: Int. 2 completed passes for 6 and 9 yards and then the horrible throw for the INT.

5th Drive: 12 play drive 5:27 possession. From 34 until TD to Cotchery. This includes a 4th down conversion

6th Drive: 7 play drive 3:45 possession. This was the one drive I didn't like the playcalling. We got a huge pass to Ginn for 37 yards and got to Jax 37 after a J Stew run. We had 2nd and 6 and called the option where Cam got -5 yards and then was sacked for -6 yards. We should have come away with points here.

7th Drive: 7 play drive Almost 4 min possession. This drive was killed with the penalty on Kalil for the illegal man down field and then the screen pass to Whittaker that had potential but I believe Norwell missed a block. We can call this a "bad series" if ya'll want to.

8th Drive: 3 and out. I don't remember much of this drive. But it was not a good one.

9th Drive: 15 play drive 8:07 possession. We were very conservative on the end of this drive, just running to keep the clock going and make it a 2 possession game. Ended in a 47 yard FG.

10th Drive: 3 runs when we were in field goal range after the TD interception.

Overall, this was a very good day in my opinion from Shula. We can nitpick a few series but we controlled the clock for 9 minutes more than JAX. We had a 47% 3rd down efficiency which wasn't bad. We had nice distribution from the run to pass.

I think we need to make sure that we don't criticize just to criticize. This was a good game for Shula.

I'm still trying to find these 17 extra points we could have had.

11?  Yes, if everything goes perfectly (which is what Shula requires... an offense that Shula coordinates cannot be allowed a mistake or a refs error, special-needs Shula can't recover from that).

That bullshit penalty on Olsen which took away a TD.

Ginn dropped an easy TD

I didn't finish watching the game but I believe Gano had a FG blocked. That's your 17 points.

14 pts. we got a field goal instead of a TD so we left 4 points on the board there, plus 7 from Ginn's drop and a blocked FG makes 3 more so 14 total. 17 if you argue about Gano's miss from 50+

Good objective post.  Not the normal.. Shula sucks because well ... I know we dropped the ball and missed blocks and did all kinds of bad stuff but it's Shula's fault post.

That bullshit penalty on Olsen ended up resulting in a made FG.  You don't get to add 7 extra points for that.

Again, if your offense is set up that you can't score more than 20 points when REGULAR FOOTBALL THINGS happen to you (bad ref calls, dropped passes, fumbles, interceptions, missed FGs), then your offense is a piece of poo.

REGULAR FOOTBALL THINGS happen all the time to offenses around the league and they push through them.  But, OH HELL, not a Shula offense!  REGULAR FOOTBALL THINGS are unfair for Shula and must be excused for the special-needs OC!

I'm usually all about the Shula hate. I don't like that we didn't ever go back to what worked for Cam with the Shockey/Olsen combo. I wish we would run more with the I-formation and that we would pass more with Cam under center because he does a good job under center because it forces him to get his feel moving.

But....in this one game I can't complain too much.

It wasnt 17 it was 14.  The Olsen penalty where we settled for a field goal, the missed catch by Ginn and the field goal that Gano missed.  People saying 17 forgot we did score a field goal on the Olsen penalty
