Read Option Issues

I liked a few of our read option plays. I just think we used it way too much this game. They knew it was coming after a few worked. With no pass to scare the D from stacking the box they just blew up our seemingly favorite thing to do.

Why does it seem like we run a play that works till it doesn't and then a few more for good measure just in case they got amnesia. It's so frustrating and we need to keep Cam healthy. Stop shoving this play down our throats and try something different.

In reality, we only have a few different run plays.

Inside zone
Outside zone
Power
Option

We just run those out of different formations. We ran the option today as much as all the other types of run plays. You have to keep reminding them of it. Make them over-expect it. Don't abandon it just because they stopped it after a few successful tries. Otherwise, you start abandoning your gameplan. Then you're like dogs without horses, running wild.

thats fine but it was laughable how easily they started keying into it. You need to make them pay for over comiting to the plays. Why don't we do that?

Very frustrating to see this.  Read option just doesn't work as a consistent attack in the NFL.  It's best used the way Jax ran it today--when teams least expect it.  Thing is, we don't have an WRs that can keep defenses honest.  And Shula's idea of improvisation is to just let Cam choose to carry it.  We need to rip that page out of the playbook IMO.

yes except that it seems they have somehow restrained Cam. He still feels pressure just fine and scrambles at the appropriate times, but he doesnt commit like he used to and tuck it to run. he slows himself down trying to go through his reads. and ends up letting defenders catch up to him.

that really annoyed me today. not at Cam. but at his coaches. they are bridling a prize race horse. i dont understand it...

prize race horses with their legs broken  bc the riders didn't know how to limit them or let them go when the time was right. A hurt Cam equals a dead season.

the kid looked slow and old vs explosive....it was sad because i wasn't sure If I was looking at the same talent from before. its game one though

Cam nearly always "looks" slow because he is huge. He only "looks" fast as he's pulling away from guys or beating guys to the edge. It's not that he is actually running faster then, it's just that your eyes have a point of comparison.

Also, it is game one. Kuechly, before the injury, made some misreads on gaps on some runs. Something that doesn't happen often. It's just how the game works. Guys need a couple weeks to feel things out. Cam looked fine today. Healthy. Steady. Strong. Focused. Accurate. All the things everybody ever wants him to be on here.

Which brings me to my next point...WHY do people constantly find SOMETHING to criticize Cam over? He throws like, 3 bad passes all game and otherwise looks solid, but people seriously have to find something to complain about. "He looks old and slow". No. He doesn't.

On the OP again though, the read option is vital to our run game. Cam's running ability is a weapon and a distraction for the defense. You can't run QB powers all game. You have to get him on the edge in space and give him the ability to get out of bounds and avoid big hits by linebackers when you run him, more often than not. The read option gives you the run threat. It sets up designed handoffs when linebackers and dropped down safeties go outside the tackle, anticipating Cam to keep it, opening a natural run lane inside.

Scheme, people. It's all about our run scheme.

Our running game was just plain awful out of every formation. And Cam seems slower he couldn't out run  Scooba or what ever his name is.

Skuta is fast. Ran a 4.68 40 time, play speed is faster. In comparison, Cam ran a 4.58. Not much of a difference in speed, and Cam is trying to beat him around the edge. Skuta wasn't faster, just taking good angles. Have Cam running with Skuta in pursuit from behind, he's not catching Cam as long as Cam isn't having to juke.

My god, are we going to Cam is slower if he's not bigger AND faster than EVERY defensive player now?

Also, the running game wasn't that bad. Stew got thrown for a couple losses or no gains, but it wasn't often. He still averaged 3 yards a pop. As a team, we rushed for over 100 yards at 3 yards per rush. 4 yards is the minimum you ideally shoot for, as a team.

Take away the BS runs where we were trying to chew clock, I'd say we probably did average right at 4 yards per carry. That's efficient. Wasn't flashy and we weren't gashing the defense, save for a couple runs for decent gains. The run game did it's job.

Seriously, do I have to teach some of you the game of football?

4.68 is not fast in the NFL and just 2 seasons ago Cam was out running DB's around the edge and everything.

And yes the running game was bad, in what universe is 3 ypc good? might as well go sign Trent Richardson. Take away the 22 yard run from the first drive and our running game looks even more pathetic.

Unless we are playing Bortles every week the run game is gonna have to do a hell of a lot better than this,

Cam after the game " our offense wasn't pretty. Panthers huddle after the game "our offense did a good job". Let me guess Cam is being a debbie downer, you guys are right.
