Panthers - Jags Preview and Analysis

Reading a piece on matchups to watch at the Observer this morning, one of the highlighted matchups was Michael Oher vs. Jags DE Chris Clemons.   In the PFF depth chart rankings I posted above, Clemons is listed as "below average" - we might want to take that with a grain of salt, just as the Jags would be wise to do re: the "poor" ranking of Kony Ealy.

The inspiration for “The Blind Side” book and movie will be tested against Jacksonville defensive end Chris Clemons. The former Seahawks edge rusher had eight sacks in 2014 during his first season with the Jaguars. Keeping Clemons off Cam Newton would be a good start to Oher’s Carolina career.

Clemons is 34 and has played 11 seasons.  Obviously he's had some very good years.  But here's hoping we can wear him down quickly with great ball control and lots of long scoring drives.

Cam is going to need to be able to connect with receivers, early in the game, to loosen up their defense.

I expect a good mix of no-huddle and wideout screen-passes early in the game just so Cam can get in a rhythm  allowing our run game to open up.

If we're successful with this early, we can do some serious damage while controlling the clock with our play-action and read-option rushing attack.

I can see now why the Jags are favored to win by so many...

By the way, I now notice a rather GLARING typo in the data I entered for the JAX O Line.  Wouldn't it be something if their LG only weighed 210?!?!?

I'm pretty sure that should be 310.  Apologies for the error!

NFL site has him at 315...

Also Jermey Parnell is 315 not 245.  Weird

Sorry I didn't catch these errors sooner.  Perhaps I somehow got weight data mismatched when copying players and data into Excel from the Jax roster page...

T'would appear that we have some young analytics enthusiasts on the Huddle now.

KB is the statistician. im more of a writer. i try not to tread on his territory haha.

Here's what I think the stats should be (rounded figures for yards...):

Stat                                  CAR            JAX

Yards per game                347             290

Passing Yards                   219            188

Rushing Yards                   127             102

Points per game                 21.2            15.6

I'm not on Facebook, so I can't log on to comment at Panthers.com to tell them about the errors.

sounds about right to me KB. those are the figures i found when writing my preview. its disappointing that the Panthers website would commit such errors

A Look at Jacksonville's Starters:

CORRECTIONS:  I seem to have somehow gotten at least 2 incorrect weights for the JAX OLine.  Sorry not to have caught the mistake earlier.  Beadles should be 315 and Parnell is also 315.  Not quite sure what happened.  I cut and paste the data from the JAX roster page, but perhaps at some point I copied names and weights separately and got things mixed up?

WTF KB? Getting weight wrong? I expected better from you. ;P

No worries...I echo what others have said.  I enjoy your posts and appreciate the amount of effort you put into them.  The info you provide is always informative and interesting to read.  Thanks man...and kudos.

Ok, at least one of the errors is not my fault.  While I did use the Jags roster page for some information, I also used Pro Football Reference.  They've got the weight and height incorrect for Parnell

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/jax/2015_roster.htm

http://www.jaguars.com/team/roster/Jermey-Parnell/0ee02dbc-6f6e-4133-a20c-c56a7f61b312

One reason I used PFR is I prefer how they calculate years played.  It seems to better reflect actual game experience rather than just an "accrued season."

For instance for Jermey Parnell, he's played 4 NFL Seasons, while the Jags site (like those of all NFL teams) shows him as being in his 6th season, counting his practice squad year.

As I looked at it again this morning, I realize what happened.  Someone confused the Defense's stats with the Offense's stats!  LOL LOL LOL  (though it's a bit sad no one caught it...)

The figures on the infographic represent yards allowed, points allowed, etc.  Which means low numbers are good.

We led JAX both on Offense AND Defense by significant margins last year.

What's odd is, it should have been pretty obvious if one knows JAX was 3-13 last year.  There's no way they scored more points per game than we did, or gained more yards.  So instantly I knew it had to be wrong...
