Norman Contract Talks Stall per Person

top dawg

Recommended Posts

I will try and find a link, but I am on my phone,  plus it's a Charlotte Observer article,  but here is a key quote:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article34950435.html

“I bet on myself my whole life. Ever since I was a little boy I bet on myself,” Norman told reporters in Spartanburg. “Until now, I’m still betting on myself. Nothing’s going to change about that.

“I know what I bring to the table. I know what I’m going to do. It’s not something I’m going to lax or let off or something like that. My confidence level is high.”

“There’s only probably about 10 of us, probably less than that, in the league that can handle guys like Julio, the (Dez) Bryants, the Megatrons (Calvin Johnson),” Norman said in August.

“You don’t have that many. I would say only a handful. So you’ve got to take that into consideration. We are a rare breed.”

He is going to be playing for a contract this year,  folks.

He wants to get paid.  He is going to have to earn it.  To get more per year than Luke though.  I don't know about that.  His body of work is too spotty, and he is too inconsistent to be comparing himself to the top tier guys.  He is going to have to show me.

Expected this to happen if he wasn't offered top 5-10 money. Believes he's a shutdown corner and played like it last season, but not enough for a good GM like Gettleman to offer that kind of money.

He plays like he did last season and he will see top 3 money and be worth it for whomever he signs with be it Carolina or somewhere else.

Hopefully Carolina and top 5 money

If he plays this entire year the way he did last year (which I fully expect him to), he'll have earned a $10+M/year contract, and we'd be stupid not to keep him. He is truly a legitimate shutdown corner and he plays with an attitude that every team needs. He's the heart and soul of the secondary, and a huge part of our defense. DG knows that and I think he's trying to get him at a bargain now. Probably too much of a bargain and that's why Josh hasn't agreed yet. Josh wants to stay in Carolina so I think if he got a respectable offer he'd stay, even if it's not top 5 or 10 corner money. I'm glad to see that talks were ever going on in the first place, even if they've stalled now, since I'd heard nothing about it before. Remember, deadlines yield action in the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised to see him signed before Jacksonville if talks have actually occurred. Cutting it very close, yes, but it was reported before guys like Eli and Rivers got their deals that those deals absolutely weren't going to happen and that they stalled so it's not impossible Josh is extended. Extremely unlikely but I've still got my hopes up. Worst case, he balls out and we pay him next year even if it's a bit more.

A solid front 7 can make an average secondary look great (see Carolina 2013) but a greay CB won't do the same for a mediocre front 7, and we know Gettleman has and will invest there.  He will pay Josh a fair rate if he continues to perform, but won't overpay based on his valuation. For better or worse Gettleman will set his price after this season and Josh will take it or leave it.

This is what I was just returning to the thread to post about. CB has never really been a huge emphasis in Rivera's defenses. He prefers to load up the front 7 and give the secondary an easy job.

    • You are correct. In 2020, ESPN had us 32nd in terms of continuity. All the coaches were new and we lost tons of starters like Luke, Cam, Greg, TD, etc. CMC played 10 games in Rhule’s first two years. Rhule wasn’t good but we came close to beating both #1 seeds in 2020 with Teddy and we started 2021 3-0 and there was talk about playoff byes. Again, bad but much better than the coach and GM we empowered. The Cowboys game really threw ice water on the 5 game feel good run, but it still feels way better than the we got lucky to win 2 games last year.
    • The best WR college football are both true freshman, this tmac is more of a mid first round pick.
