Panthers trying out DE's instead of WR's

I was saying this but the huddle froze on me on my mobile and my post died in no mans land. When we went deep in the playoffs and Super Bowl we had a great running game which opened the smaller receivers Smith and Muhammad and we had an awesome D..so It seems we are trying to go down that path again... Just a bonehead kick gave the Pats the extra yardage not them in our huddle!!

I mean, hell, we just traded for Norwood.  There is no possible way to know how he and Funchess will perform this season.  It's not like we haven't tried to address receiver, it's just that we've been insanely hit by the injury bug at that position.  Sure, I'm not happy about the current depth chart like anyone else, but the future's looking probably pretty good there if Funchess pans out and if Norwood can at least be decent.  That's a pretty nasty trio with Benji back next year.

I'm sure WR continues to be high on the radar.  Philly's drops were AWFUL to watch.  But having just rewatched the Patriots game last night,  without the emotion and angst over the drops that I felt when watching them happen live, I was surprised how good some of the other throws and catches were.  Ginn & Cotch looked really sharp (Cotch left early of course with the groin pull), and Olsen was his amazing self, up to his career year standards of last year.  Ginn in particular could really have a big season, I think.

I'm also increasingly excited about Norwood when you think of who he's practiced against for the last year.  Seattle's Legion of Boom.  Awesome.  He's been tested by a GREAT defense.  Should bode well for him being a tough player and able to catch in traffic and under pressure.  Obviously they cut him for a reason, but I still think we'll be surprised how quickly he progresses.  Just a feeling really.  Don't have any hard data to back it up (smile).

Also watching CAP and Wegher (and Todman, and Fozzy) run both against the Pats and Pittsburgh... if the Pittsburgh game gives any meaningful indication of a strengthened run block for our Oline, that will help keep defenses honest and give a lot of help to our passing game.

Perhaps it's homer / rose-colored glasses, but I thought our offense looked pretty good against the Pats once you set aside Philly's awful drops.  If he continues to be awful he needs to be demoted / cut though I love his speed and how he gets open.  But for now, I think the no panic approach is ok.  Alot of course depends on if / how Shula adapts his game plans.  That probably is much more important at the moment than actually bringing in a new receiver.

KB keep doing your threads and keep pounding, this team has me really excited.  I have a feeling this will be a special season for the ages!  This maybe the most depth at OL ever.  People hate on Chandler but they forget how good he was at guard while learing on the fly but yet they want to make a tackle out of him.  Chris Scott is in shape, I mean real good shape wth happen but he looked really good. Silatolu is probably the weakest link.  Remmers has been exceptional for a journeyman lineman.  Williams is going to be a monster. Oher is rejuvinated and Kalil is our rock.  Last but not least the two beast that feast, Norwell and Turner.  All of the OL are relatively young.  I think they could be the second strongest position behind LBs.

I actually like trying out Bowers. I've never been the biggest fan of Wes Horton or Mario Addison, and if Bowers didn't have the knees of a 90 year old, he could be an upgrade.

Ellis also could provide more depth if Cole or Edwards start getting tired/wore down.

Honestly when it comes to the way some of you feel about our WR position you're in the minority. Everyone outside of Panther land know we need an upgrade. The coaches know it too, there are probably reasons unknown to us fans as to why that hasn't happened. But on an otherwise strong roster, it's a glaring weakness.

I just don't think there are many options to take at this point. Not many in free agency really yell "Pick me up." I think we see how they do this week. I really do think Jericho is a decent slot, Funchess has ability to do some damage, and I hope Philly can catch the damn ball. I think if we see him drop some this week, we make a move. I really hope I can see this "elite route running" people are getting chubs about.

I believe Nicks could be productive here for us, I know many disagree. He's not the player he was bound to be a few years ago, but I think he could easily be one of the wideouts on the team here. Maybe they make a move after week one, we'll see. If the offense rolls then hey it's all good, but it's frustrating.

Yada Yada Yada. Blah Blah Blah.

Why wouldn't we wait until the second week to sign a receiver anyway. Most of the ones out there that may be worth a look would be guaranteed the balance of their salary if they were cut, provided they were signed during week one. After week one, they can just be terminated without penalty.

I don't hate Nicks but he's an older injured Devin Funchess. We have 5 WRs on our roster right now, I would call 3 of them slow possession receivers. I don't think Nicks makes sense for us.
