He also said that Stewart would be at Wednesday's practice and they hoped they would work with him to get him ready to play.
Interesting. I did rule out Stewart on my list of potential names for returner.

Then again, Fox could be pulling our chain (gasp ) and will use one of our young players instead after all.

Seems pretty risky putting Smitty in there. Besides the fact he is a great receiver.....there are are so few receivers. Besides, at this point, Fox just wants someone who will not fumble. Smitty already had an injury in TC. If he got seriously hurt the first game returning punts................

I could only see that late in the season with a desperate team.

Football is a risky sport. Every time a player goes on the field he risks injury. You can't go out there to protect him or be safe. Paradoxically the guys who always try and avoid injury often end up being the ones who get hurt by freak circumstances. He stands less chance of an injury returning punts than he does on a reverse.

Agreed....but if we lost Smitty for the season from an injury that occurred while he was returning a punt during game 1.....well...years from now that would be a bigger thorn than Gamble's lateral.

Since the Big Cat just fired his son....Foxxy might want to minimize potential perceived mistakes.

Just sayin.

Belichick has Welker returning and imo he is just as valuable as Moss in that system.

OR......having his body completely exposed when he has to jump up, or dive for a pass, and is left completely defenseless.

Just sayin.............

Smitty could get hurt just as easily making a routine catch as returning a punt. Honestly though, how many punt returners do you see actually get injured returning the kicks? Not many that I can remember...at least in relation to any other position. Now, I agree that if they dont want to put him in ANY other spots where an injury could occur, then punt returner probably wouldnt be a good idea....but he was one of the best in the whole league when he did it, and would probably be just as good, or better if he did it now.
