Panthers Field Second Oldest Roster

It's nice knowing our stars are just now coming of age while we fill out the roster with proven veterans that bring leadership and knowledge to the team while understanding their role. I am not at all worried about this stat as not one of our building blocks are even close to retirement.

I feel the same way. We all know how Ron covets his veterans.

Not to mention the fact that we have 2-Walter Payton Men of the Year on our squad.

Just guessing, but most teams can't even boast having 1 player of such esteemed honor.

Are there any other teams with 2-MOY?

It's a bit misleading because so many of our Starters are under 30. Of our 11 Starters on offense, Olsen, Kalil and Ginn are the only guys over 30. Ginn should get an asterisk as a starter too because pending Benjamin's injury he's a number 3 at best.

Defense, our over 30 guys are Davis, Tillman, and Harper. That's it. CJ, while he's been in the league forever, just turned 29 a few months ago. Dude is still in his prime. To give you all a percentage, 27% of our starting roster this year is over 30. That's not bad at all, and most likely won't be the case once the Funchise steps to take a starting receiver spot or another Safety steps in for Harper/Bene jumps Tillman.

Actually, I do in a way. I'm helping keep this site that I frequent online. Even if it is for 5 dollars a month. To me, that's close to a days salary. To each their own and all that jazz.

Jeremy and co. Do a great job and this is a great site and does great service to the Panther Fanbase as a whole.

I spend more time on this site than any other website. So thanks to all who contribute to this Forum.

KB not being on the active roster makes us look older too.

Cant believe Ginn is over 30. He probably has the fewest snaps of any other top-3 WR starter in the league. That has to count for something. He really doesn't have much tread-wear on those tires.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Stewart has less carries than any other 28+ year old starting running back in the league as well.

It was mentioned in a recent article that Gettleman has made it a focus to add playoff experience.  It would make sense that our age across the board has risen.  You say age, I say experience.

Now, as the Panthers prepare to face the Jaguars in their season opener, they could have as many as 105 playoff appearances among their 22 projected starters, with 50 wins, five Super Bowl appearances and three titles.

I really find it hard to believe this team is that old, compared to the rest of the league.

the upside here is that most of our best players are either still on rookie contracts or just coming into their first post-rookie contracts.

Yeah, that stat caught me by surprise given the numbers of rookies who made our roster last year.  I'll try to dig a bit more deeply into the age and experience data by offense / defense and/or position groups and look at year by year comparisons for the past 4 - 5 years.

It might also be worth comparing the total roster age average to the starters age average and see how that compares with other teams in the league, but to do that I'll wait for the 1st games to be played and the starting rosters to become clear.

it's comforting to know that Indy is the oldest because they are super bowl contenders and don't have nearly the quality of defense compared to the Panthers.

They have an aging O-line and a below average defense with little to no ground game if my memory serves me correctly.

If if all that age of theirs is on the O-line, mister Luck and Indy could become Philip Rivers and the Chargers over his career...as in, good enough to make the playoffs every year, but getting bad draft position and second-rate talent to replace their aging and retiring vets.

Here's a list of players on our roster acquired since the beginning of last season (in order of acquisition - newest first)

CAP & Wegher are older than many rookies...

The average age for all these newly acquired players 26.06 years.  We had a much smaller rookie class than most teams.

Tillman, Ginn & Oher also obviously pull the average up.

I'll calculate average age for offense vs. defense next.

Although the news of our being the 2nd oldest roster surprised me, I think it's not a bad thing.  Gettleman specifically mentioned in his comments related to building the 53 man roster in the past few days that he was aiming to add some experience to the roster last year and this year.  He saw how our inexperience hurt us in the SF playoff game.

I'll see if I can find the quote I'm remembering...

League wide....we seem to be older at some positions where a lot of teams are holding youth.  Take our HBs, Atlanta as a random example,  has 3 HBs younger than our youngest.

We don't have youth stashed at TE

Little things like that add up in this.  Doesn't matter, in an offseason any team can swing either direction.

if you add last season's rookies, that is a huge injection of youth and talent. Not just talent, but starting-caliber talent. There's gonna be a big turnover once Tolbert, CJ, Cotchery, Harper and Stewart come off the books. Tillman may retire after this season. We could draft BPA in any order of DE, T, S, RB, WR next year looking strictly for speed and size and we've got a juggernaut for the next 5-6 years.
