2013- A look back at WR stats and why I feel good.. And you should too.

Meh.

Smitty was still commanding double teams and taking pressure away from LaFell and Ginn. That's not going to be the case this season.

How about we wait and see what happens? At the end of the day, it's still about Superb Owls, and once we meet up with a more complete team (regardless of record) we are going to have some issues unless Funchess and Norwood ball out.

The main difference from that year is the Panthers lack an elite pass-rusher that can propel the defense into the top 5.  The 2013 defense was one of the best in Panthers history - they didn't allow a first half touchdown until like Week 8. When you have a defense THAT good, you don't have to pass as much, hence why those numbers were so low. I don't see the Panthers having as good of a defense as they did in 2013, but if they can still keep scores low, the offense can still do enough to win games.

With the first place schedule we get GB and Seattle, the AFC North which is = AFC East in 2013 and the NFC East which weaker than the NFC West in 2013.  Maybe a little easier but not by much.

IMO this defense is going to be better than 2013 and offensively I think we will have matured and by season end will be a feared team to play..

The reason why we didn't need much WR contributions was because we had the #2 overall defense and led the league in sacks that year.

Its possible that the defense could be just as good this year, and the offensive line/running game might be better.   The secondary and linebackers might be better.  The defensive line probably won't be as good, but the back 7 improvement could offset that.   The offensive line and run game might be better than 2013.

This group should be decent enough. Cam's a good enough QB and we have Olsen to offset the WR group. I think Philly will come through but will struggle at times. Cam makes Ginn a WR to respect. Funchess will be good and will probably be starting by season's end. He can make all the difference.

I can agree with most of that, but Mitchell and Captain had really good seasons all-around which, like you said, could have been cause/effect of our d-line.

Harper is a glaring weakness and I honestly can't be sold on either Norman or Bene as both are still enigmas, as neither have played enough for me to confidently depend on either of them to cover elite receivers on a consistent basis.

i think there is promise for an improved backfield but we're not gonna know until we see them in action.

the run defense, however, was atrocious last season and without Star and an unproven rookie in Shaq, our rush defense is really going to be tested and here again, the proof will be in the pudding as to wether Shaq can shed lead blockers and plug holes when they need plugging and cover the flats sideline to sideline.

if CJ can play at 100%, especially early in the season, I think is paramount in setting the tone for the season, 'cause that's what we're gonna need for this defense to get settled and become a cohesive unit in all three levels. So in conclusion, I feel this defense will go as CJ goes because he is the cornerstone on the weak side...the old adage applies here as well..."You're only as good as your weakest link."
