Football players - and athletes in general, to be honest - are a very superstitious bunch. Lucky hats, socks, underwear, pre-game rituals, etc.

(not that any of us on The Huddle would ever do stuff like that of course)

If he thinks using a different name and number messed with his mojo, it doesn't surprise me that he'd want to change it.
