Despite recent trade, Panthers still in need of receiver help

Regarding Norwood, I'm almost certain he makes the roster. No way the staff is making this kid make it or break it after one walk through practice and the 4th preseason game. They were obviously considering drafting him last year and now view the trade as being able to make good on that now that we're in a pinch.

No need to be almost certain, be certain. Gettleman is not in the business of throwing draft picks down the drain. He basically treats all of them like money, and has said as much. In so many words, that is.

Well, that's what we were discussing, not whether or not we lost our top two receivers. Your response should have been to him, not me.

The thing is, after all the discussion in this thread, we still need help at receiver.

we aren't getting help.

you would have to go buy yourself help.  Dave won't do that.  You won't get help for what he is willing to do...

the fact he wouldn't even kick tires in a simple workout on Wayne speaks volumes.  I personally think Wayne is done and a workout would have proved that....but you gotta kick those tires.

Belchick is kicking them.  His team goes 10+ wins every year for a reason.   He also doesn't get emotionally attached to dudes and kicks them to the curb.

It's been two weeks since KB went down and you get the feeling some folks expected a #1 replacement to be in place for tomorrow's game already. It's ridiculous. I'll admit we are in a tight spot because of the setback, but I'll point out that the roster decision for WR suddenly became much more complex than how many and who gets a final roster spot. Seems to me that the prudent move was to ratchet up the competition by adding a sought after prospect and waiting to see what comes available this weekend. A trade would be nice if the one year rental makes sense, but unfortunately I think we would do well to wait and see what what is available without a trade.

exactly.

I don't know.  I think too many people buy into a "one player away" thing, are too willing to give up continual success for right now.   You field the best football team you can every year.

And the people dying for a big trade for this or that would be the first in line to criticize how bad it was if/when it didn't work.

At least part of the help is already here, regardless of whether people like it or not. I would bet that we bring in more, if not by next week, before September is out. But, even if we don't, Kevin Norwood is going to be here for awhile.

In his impromptu interview on Tuesday, here is what Gman said:

"You’ve got a million avenues to improve your roster," Gettleman said. "And shame on you if you don’t explore every avenue."

I think that he is going to be true to his word, and unlike our untrained eyes, he is going to see something of worth at the bottom of the barrel. He seems to think that he already has.

What gets me is how many of you believe that there is just this big group of Huddlers that expects Gman to bring in a WR1. That is a myth. Personally, I haven't seen anyone say that.

Help just means an improvement upon what you already have, especially in this situation. Now some of you may just want to overlook obvious help in your zeal to rail against some sky-is-falling narrative that may or may not exist, but there are other options out there that may be better than what we already have. Gman has already shown you that, regardless of whether you believe Norwood can help or not.

This x1000.  But it's much more fun to browbeat people for saying they want help at WR.

I think the reason those claiming we need help and feel Gman hasn't done all he can in that aspect of WR seem so impassioned is because as you said, "help just means an improvement on what you already have."  So when we don't bring in anyone else outside of Norwood considering what we currently have, many feel we aren't doing all we can to look for help, because it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to improve on what is currently here.

I know I have basically said it before in so many words (and it may have even been in this thread), that it seems to me that people just don't realize how...bland our wide receiving corps is (and I'll let people define "bland" how they like). To me it seems like it just won't take too much to spice it up. Sure we may not have the Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning (which is delicious on chicken, I might add), but perhaps that Supreme Tradition Salt Free Seasoning from Dollar Tree might do wonders for that flank steak that would otherwise turn out like unseasoned beef jerky without adding anything to it.

So in essence Dave has addressed the WR position in the last two drafts with a first round pick, a second round pick, and a fourth round pick. He has addressed o-line by adding two young guards and a young OT that looks legit. He has addressed RB position in the draft.  I am struggling to see how Dave is ignoring the offense like many local radio hosts and callers have said ad nauseum since KB was hurt.

if there was a true #1 WR just sitting out there- dont we all think he would have been signed by now..?

Gman won't be able to bring in anyone that really helps the WR position- let alone, have the time to connect with Cam and learn each other to make significant impact this year. We just have to go to war hoping Ginn can improve on his 2013 year with Cam and hope Funch can just be decent (600 yds / 6 TDs).

I will assume the position of the people you are referring to on local sports talk SCP, as I have been that here lol.  I look at it like this SCP, if you are looking for a daily driver, and I give you the choice of having a working Daewoo or a relatively new Honda Accord/Civic (depending on your needs) for roughly the same price, which one are you picking?

Likewise, if you were looking for a sports car, and you have the means to buy them (which we do have the means to address WR), would you settle for a base model V6, or do you want to go ahead and get the V8 with all the bells and whistles.

In our scenario, a V8 is likely out there, but we haven't brought them in to check them out.  And before someone tries to rip apart this metaphor, we are in the market for an american muscle car...  Guys like Calvin Johnson are Mazeratis and KB is like a Ferrari.  Philly Brown and Bersin are Yugos.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
