The 4th and Short Play Calling and Execution is Atrocious

Recommended Posts

Oddly enough, this is a common theme of all of Shula's offenses every year he's been an NFL OC.

But, yeah, must be the players...

I am not saying Shula is Don Coryale and Mike Martz love child. I shake my head sometimes on his play calls.  I'm not basing anything on Shulas " history" .   All I'm saying is if I just watch the game, not putting any bias into it, I see drops, missed blocks, really bad QB throws and missed assignments at key moments that hurt us badly.  I see far more of that than I see poor route tree/playcalling.  This board gets into a witch hunt and no matter what else happens they refuse to see anything else.  Take for instance last night, we get stuffed on a run its Shula's fault.  We convert on a 3rd and short pass it's good play by Cam/Receiver.   Shula calls good play and Corey Brown is wide open for the touchdown, is there any mention that was a good call?  Nope.

Couple that with the fact that we have had Byron Bell,  Amini Silatolu and Nate Chandler play significant time on the Offensive line  and also the fact we have had at receiver :The Legedu Nanaae, Jason Avant, , Amanti "Training camp MVP" Edwards,  Kealou "Mr Hawaii" Pilares,  Joe "Youtube" Adams,  and Louis "Eddie" Murphys, David "2 Fast" Clowney and Dwayne "M$%$%$% USC Recievers" Jarret. That the poo poo platter of receivers right there.

Pretty much. Shula deserves some heat for some of his playcalls, but I find the "BLAME SHULA FOR EVERYTHING" schtick to be a very lazy analysis of our offensive woes.

Personally, I think its a test of the offense at this point. This team will need to be able to set the tone in the run game. So many of us are focusing on the pass game, but I'm glad Shula is focused on getting our run game in shape. Most of the time, you are going to run it on those 3rd and 4th and shorts.

We see this from Shula in the regular season pretty frequently as well. The last time we faked a hand-off and rolled Cam out he found Olsen wide open for 6 at home against Atlanta. That may have been two years ago.

I'm not calling for anything exotic. I'm wanting to see something effective in a third pre-season game. How can we expect to be successful in the season when we are reluctant to play situational football to pick up a single yard? Surely we have more than a handful of plays in the arsenal for 4th and short. I'd rather give one of our countless short yardage plays away  on tape and see us convert then continuously get stuffed for no gain. Confidence for the offensive line and backs can go a long way.

We were among the top ten in the league in converting fourth downs last year.  Top 5 in 2013.  Its one thing we have been good at on the offensive side.

We always say "when regular season comes, that isn't going to happen", when we know damn well NOTHING is going to change.

This right here.

Most of you need to take off your big thick glasses and at some point realize Shula is going to Shula. It doesn't matter if it's preseason, regular season or the Super Bowl, Shula is freaking Shula and as long as he's the OC don't expect much in the way of creativity. We need someone in the FO that understands offense.
