David Newton: Wegher still longshot

top dawg

Recommended Posts

Byron Bell was an UDFA offensive lineman that made the team and started for years and he couldn't block at all. At least Wegher is a beast  at his position. Not to mention great on special teams which is what the coaches were asking players to be if they wanted to make the team. He has done all he can do. If we don't keep him(which we will) he will go on and be great somewhere else

Certainly Wegher has the coaches attention, and Ron has already said that he's making the roster decisions "tough."  I think that shows an open mind.

I REALLY hope Wegher gets some reps against the 1s and 2s tonight so we can see how he plays against NFL starters.  It would help in his evaluation.

It's perhaps worth noting that Panthers.com is giving Wegher quite a bit of press (in addition to his TD highlight videos)

I think this suggests he's got a good chance of making the team.

I understand the concern that we could lose him if he goes to the Practice Squad.  I think that's a very real risk.  I hope we keep him.  I think he shows outstanding potential.  At this point I think he's got about a 75 - 80% chance of making the roster, and if he keeps playing like he has the past two weeks, that will go up.

Newton's points are valid, but he seems to lack inside info on this one, as you suggest.  Preseason is only half over, and I am willing to bet that his chances are solid.  I am sure he can learn to block.  The issue with Wegher is this: Do we try to develop him on the PS or do we give him the roster spot?  I am not so sure that it is about what Wegher brings to the table right now, but about what he might develop into on another roster.  Wegher has been killing it on special teams.  Newton is totally wrong on this one.  We give Wegher a hard look tonight and especially vs. Pittsburgh.  Special teams, running ability, fan favorite (reminds me of Fred Lane so much), potential to make you regret cutting him if he goes to another roster--he makes this team.

Newton always lack inside info. He gets most of his inside info from turning over a rock and watching his poo go down the toilet.

Wegher was done wrong tonight. The coaches clearly limited him and loaded up Todman for a horrible showing. Wish he turned that one broken play into the highlight of the game. He had that all lined up and worked back to Webb into a hole in the defense to set that up, and still almost caught Webb's knuckle ball.

If anyone thinks CAP, Whitaker or Todman are capable blockers they need to be fired. Whitaker still makes the wrong read and goes after the decoy while letting the blitzer through. CAP gets pushed back often. Todman could not block to save his life since he takes on the role of a shot put.

Tired of seeing Todman get tossed around. He has no toughness. Whitaker is a 3rd down skat back at best. CAPs pinball running style where he bounces off players until he is met head on while needing a 5 yard hole is getting old. CAP has yet to show me he can run over someone in college or the pros. At least demonstrate a decent stiff arm as an NFL RB.

Wegher is the best all around RB the Panthers have outside of Stewart, and the only RB the Panthers have that I believe is a threat to break the game open any time he touches the ball.

Meanwhile, undrafted players like Corey Brown get pushed up the depth chart when they have no proven consistency or big play threat. I have just about had it with the coaches ability to evaluate talent on the field.

Remember Cason, Avant, Silatolu, Godfrey, and DeCoud from last season? Took half a season to make the cuts that should have been done at the beginning of the season when the writing was on the wall.

On top of that, the play calling was horrible tonight by the coaches as well as the decisions throughout the game in key situations. Another long first half of the season coming up until the coaches are backed into the corner and have to make the risky decisions in key moments of the season that make for a winning team. In the meantime, lay it up, play it safe, and hope for the best.

I have this feeling the Panthers are going to cut Wagher in this first round of cuts. Hope I am wrong, because that would be an idiotic decision for a game breaker who just needs to polish up his pass blocking compared to all the other horrible blockers at RB. Always better to have the players like Corey Brown and Jordan Todman who look good in practice, but suck in a game.  If Corey Brown screws up again next week, then he supplants Jeff Lewis as the #1 preseason failure in Panthers history.

What is up with all the reps for Webb at QB? The Panthers know what they have in him if they keep him as a #3 QB. What a waste of preseason game reps.

Still frustrated with the coaching decisions. Never going to change. More of the same every season. The only two backups that show they can have a consistent impact for a team in clutch moments on game day are Wegher and Lucas as a TE. All the other depth players are easily replaceable.

You need players who can keep drives alive and impact the game. Not players who get pushed to the ground when they are hit and drop 5 balls in a game.

Thanks for dealing with my rant. Ron Rivera and Mike Shula are extremely frustrating to watch to begin a season.

I don't know what game your watching, but CAP is easily one of the most patient and impressive backs I've seen in our backfield in a LONG time.  He waits for the hole to open up, even if its only for 3-4 yards, its better then what we had before where Deangleo would run head first into the pile and pray for an opening.
