Recent OTs drafted in the top rounds

My 4 steps for 1st round picks listed by priority: 1) Never trade them away. 2) Never draft OL, DT, K, or P. 3) Target freakish offensive skill players that fill a need. 4) Draft BPA defensive player.

Winning formula.

So I guess you hated the Star pick lol

Never say never, and if you never draft OL or DT in the first round you're gonna be unemployed before long. And in the right circumstances trading up or down in the 1st round can be a great move.

There's really nothing that sperates these young players from our own. By this standard Kony Ealy and a couple of this year's draft picks are busts.

OT is a position that takes time to refine. Doesnt mean you shouldnt invest heavily in it.

Dave said we would have picked Humphries so I don't know if this exactly makes him look good.

With Humphries, it sounds like a motivation and consistency issue right now but I wouldn't jump to conclusions quite yet with the rookies...some have great upside/potential; but the few drafts before 2015 are showing that the mid-round tackle talent has been doing pretty well compared to the top-rounds.

The learning curve is different for all of them but this class as a whole was kind of meh.  The last few actually---which is why I totally agree with the big guy, big school, big competition philosophy.

Also, we never even had a shot at most of these players and if they were on the board when we picked we absolutely wouldve taken them, so im not sure what the point here is.

It's just observation for perspective.  A lot of people no matter where we pick seem to have certain projections set in stone about the top tackles.  They're just as boom bust as any pick playing any position.  It's not so much me saying, "see look!, these guys that we couldn't of had aren't doing well" more along the lines of "Check out how the top talent these past 3-4 years at the position are doing relative to mid and late rounders and keep that in mind going forward"

The cowboys, and their redic OL have a little disagreement with no. 2.

Half this board were throwing their hands in the air last year saying how it was such a grave mistake that Dave Gettleman didn't pursue Seantrel Henderson and as such he should be fired/run out of town/drawn and quartered. Seantrel was really abysmal last season and no way he would've saved the tackle position, but I literally saw someone post "Gettleman needs to try even if it's the wrong decision". So, I really don't put much stock into what people say about tackles on this forum.

just remember, folks. 2015 is the last year of bad Hurney contracts on the books (well, except for Stewart). The cap opens up this offseason, and we haven't truly seen what Gettleman can do in free agency when he has the cash to make power moves if there's a guy he really likes out there. And I'm not talking about 50 million dollar contracts but free agents that are quality and won't cost a mortgage of future cap space, but are nonetheless asking a price that we couldn't afford previously.

Why couldn't Oher be a longterm LT for us? We have him on a 2 year deal right now so if he shows out these 2 years and fits our scheme under Matsko I don't see why we couldn't have him for longer. He's only 29, and linemen can stay good well into their mid-late thirties. Not saying we should get ahead of ourselves and appoint him our future at the position, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

I agree.  As long as Matsko stays around.  I think he could last 5 or 6 good seasons.

Top draft picks over the last few drafts that has not panned out yet. Some are on the verge of being labelled as busts.
Greg Robinson

Watched a number of Rams games last year.  Robinson made plenty of mistakes after playing OG through the preseason and first few games and then being thrown in the fire at LT after Long went down.  Also keep in mind that last year was only Robinson's 5th year playing offensive line (6th year if you count his redshirt year at Auburn).  Two years playing OL in HS, two years playing OL in college (one redshirt year)... next stop, starting at LT in the NFL.

But he was never NEVER physically overmatched.  As a matter of fact, there were plenty of plays where he mauled the guy opposite of him.

Again, he made PLENTY of rookie mistakes, but the raw material and natural intelligence are there and they flashed plenty last year.

Gross said moving from RT to LT was like a right handed basketball player being suddenly asked to shoot free throws left handed. In other words, it's a much bigger adjustment than the average fan would think it is.
