Recent OTs drafted in the top rounds

I've seen bits and pieces around here mentioning specific players but thought I'd illuminate this area as a whole in the league right now after an article got me thinking:

--

Per NFL.com:

Who seems to be trending down?

Highly drafted tackles: Entering his third season, Luke Joeckel still doesn't look natural as a pass protector. We saw him get beat on a speed rush by James Harrison in the first week of the preseason, and he had a holding penalty in the second week. Bruce Arians has picked on Cardinals first round pick D.J. Humphries publicly all preseason, and we saw why. He made Chargers pass rusher Jerry Attaochu look like Lawrence Taylor. Eric Fisher, the forgotten No. 1 overall pick of the Chiefs in 2013, remains out with an ankle injury.

Redskins No. 5 overall pick Brandon Scherff has been moved to guard, and was dominated by Detroit's defensive tackles. Saints first round pick Andrus Peat got an earful from coach Sean Payton after getting worked by Jabaal Sheard. These are all more reminders that the most overused phrase during draft season is that offensive linemen are "plug and play 10-year starters" that are somehow "safe" pick.

These are all names people were creaming over these past few years (I won't lie, me too)

Now there's been good ones within the last 3-4 years or so like Lane Johnson, Bakhtiari, Bitonio (a monster), & Tyron Smith but considering the amount of guys we tend to hype here, we seemed to turn in a smart direction in identifying a guy like Daryl as a good fit for us along with Oher as at least a "better-than-Bell" stop-gap.

(This is not intended to diminish the receiving issues, but the article seemed telling)

To make one thing clear--I'm not trying to say all of these guys will suck and we're somehow completely set but we're in a good spot along the OL for the time being.

Most of these guys didn't start, so we're talking 1 maybe 2 years experience. 80% of all positions are busts according to that, especially talking offensive tackles. Some need grooming at guard, then switch over.

I won't judge a LT off one year. I still wish there was a future being groomed at our LT spot and I don't count Oher as it. Maybe Gross just spoiled me.

Maybe Williams ends up being that guy.

For sure.  I don't think we're completely set long term, but this is a completely ok situation for now.  We've got an extra OT capable of starting in the Remmers/Oher/Williams trio. I think Fisher and Joekel are starting to look like busts though.  I'll be light on the sophomores.

Slightly off topic--I truly think Norwell is a absolute find but Turner on the flipside (even though he's the higher pick) has more work to do IMO.  He could be a brick wall though.   Kalil is still Kalil for the most part and both Remmers and Folkerts seem like decent backups.

Remmers/Oher/Williams is such a better situation than Bell/Chandler/G. Williams.  Like for reals haha.

Why couldn't Oher be a longterm LT for us? We have him on a 2 year deal right now so if he shows out these 2 years and fits our scheme under Matsko I don't see why we couldn't have him for longer. He's only 29, and linemen can stay good well into their mid-late thirties. Not saying we should get ahead of ourselves and appoint him our future at the position, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

Didn't know if that's at me but I'm not ruling it out, just being cautiously optimistic.

Not ruling out Oher signing another contract in Carolina but if Daryl Williams can play LT, look out

If Oher works out for us, he could easily hold down the spot for the next 3-5 years.  It'd be awesome if that happened, but like davos said, I don't want to rush to that conclusion.

I'll also say that if it looks like Williams is going to beat out Remmers for RT, it'd be nice to get Remmers some work over at LT during the preseason.  Our top backup OT probably needs to be a swing tackle because none of us want any part of Foucault or Chandler getting any snaps at OT in a game that actually counts.
