Grantland Podcast - NFC South Preview

Just listened to the Grantland NFL Podcast - NFC South Preview and Predictions.

Link : http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-grantland-nfl-podcast-nfc-south-preview/

Very interesting listen, and definitely reinforces the notion that no sport journalists pay attention to the Panthers, some tidbits:

  • Recorded before KB injury, both agree Panthers going 7-9.
  • One guy predicts Atlanta division winner (10-6), one predicts ... TAMPA BAY (9-7)
  • They think Amini Silatolu will start over Norwell (Haha!)
  • Believe the Panthers have no depth and any injury will derail the team.
  • Still meh on Cam Newton, no talent surrounding him.
  • They like J Stew but don't think he'll play in over 8 games.

I usually respect the poo out of Grantland, big fan of Barnwell's NFL analysis, but they clearly missed some things on this preview.

If anyone has time to listen to this hour long podcast, what say you?

Also, an actual quote - "What's a Mike Remmers?" and Mays called Charles Johnson "old" even though he's only one year older than me and I'm 5 years out of college :|

I really like Mays and Barnwell so I was pretty disappointed in the "analysis" of the Panthers. Thought it was pretty garbage to be honest.

Tampa Bay hasn't won the division in 8 years and some how they still get picked over us every year. I think it was Skip Bayless on First Take a couple of days ago who was talking about KB's injury and actually said we would be okay. He also had a very accurate assessment of New Orleans and ATL so I start to think one of his segments might actually make some sense, but then he proceeds to pick Tampa to win the division LMAO.

What were you expecting? National media didn't give us a ton of love after going 12-4, were you expecting anything different after this offseason? Unless we've won 5 or 6 in a row or we're deep in the playoffs, I've completely stopped listening to and reading national football guys. It's painful how little they know about us and pretend otherwise.

It's kind of understandable though. You may think you're a big fan of ACC basketball or SEC football, but what if you had to give an in-depth opinion on Boston College hoops or Missouri football? You would have to bluff your way through the segments using surface-level stuff you vaguely remember hearing. That's what these guys do with the Panthers.

yea but if you're covering 32 NFL teams it's not all that hard to know who the hell is on the team and who isn't. It's just lazy.

Skip Bayless is a troll. He is paid to say ridiculous things to get a reaction out of people. Don't take him seriously.

im still of the impression that NFL.com could have beat writers and that the ones ESPN employs could do a hell of alot better job.

i have no problem with beat writers. in fact i think they are a necessity to educate non-fans about teams they dont normally follow. it also reduces the amount of ignorance about small market teams if the beat writer does his job correctly (looking at you David Newton)...

All these guys care about is making some oddball prediction so in the off chance it happens they can claim that they knew it all along.

this is actually very true. when your job is to talk about sports all the time... you have to find new ways to spin the same story. The way to do this is that you must live in an alternate dimension. A dimension where all realities exist in a hypothetical que. The benefit is that you can take real credit for fake scenarios, while never really being held accountable for being illogical, biased or factual error. You can essentially give the people goose poo and call it a tootsie roll.

    • Film Room Playlist _ NFL Pro — Mozilla Firefox 2024-11-25 10-20-11.mp4 🎯🎯🎯 There were a couple of "fans" yesterday saying that this wasn't a helmet-to-helmet shot... 👀 Looks like based on where Moore was and where the play ended, he'd have gotten maybe just a yard or two more. Chuba was downed at the KC 16 and Moore was on his way back to the QB, so the offense got what they could for the most part. After reviewing the all-22, Bryce made the right call here. Tremble was the hot and KC sent both LBs. He gets it out with a clear pocket but it's quickly collapsing. If there was a little more time it looked like AT came free at the end but whether or not Bryce would've been upright still is another story. Smart move to get the completion and keep the field goal in play to stay alive. George Karlaftis is about to get himself a big ole hug and Bryce heaves it to where David Moore is going. Trent McDuffie slipped just a step or two before this shot, but we can see the clear DPI here as he's wrapped around David Moore before knocking him over as the ball gets there.
    • I’m taking a TE early day 3 Ian Thomas and Tremble are FA.  We should have no desire to bring them back.   There’s more than enough film of ball bouncing off their hands or facemask.
    • Daniel Jones sometimes would sling it for 300 or 400 yards.  That's my stance.  We know what Bryce is.  If you consistently play any QB at this level, they largely are going to end up w/ some good days/games.  last time Mahomes was at BOA, Teddy Bridgwater threw for 300+ yards and a couple TDs and the Matt Rhule Panthers almost took him down.  We know what Bryce is.  Now we got people predictably falling into a predictable trap.
