Did R.Brockel break his shoulder blade?

Is there any reason why Ward can't/doesn't play special teams?

I don't know...technically you can throw anyone out their and based on how we look at ST that seems like what we do.

Voth seems to suggest Carolina viewed him as one of the good ones.

I appreciate his efforts over the last few years, and will never forget his execution in the Annexation of Puerto Rico, but honestly, this would be good for the team.  I don't wish injuries on anyone, and it sucks, but it is the NFL, and Brockel has been one of those guys that coaches favored for no apparent reason other than he was one of their guys.  Imo, he's held up the potential development of guys like Brandon Williams and he would have hindered guys like Ward (both young and full of potential) from making the roster or contributing like he should.  Much like it's been the last few years, sometimes we need injuries to force our staff to move forward from the status quo and award jobs based on effort, talent, potential, and most importantly merit, rather than the trusted old familiarity.

Seems to me that a smart, huge, hard-nosed kid like Ward would take to hard-hitting special teams like a pig to slop.

Much like Wegher.

JMHO though.

Seems strange that all they are saying is a "shoulder injury" with no further comments so far. The whispers on the net have been fracture of some sort but no credible follow up. Wondering if it has some truth since his lead block on the goal line was have hearted at best.

don't know anything about their ability in that regards.  Our special teams seems to be undisciplined more than anything.  That ain't got much to do with popping someone.

In comments today following practice Ron just said his shoulder is "sore" and he was out there on the sideline working with trainers, so not in a cast or with it wrapped anything...

[Correction:  Sorry, I thought I'd read that Brockel was on the sidelines, but according to Voth's report from practice, he was not there.  Only report is "sore"]

I don't think someone who has participated in training camp can go on the Regular Season PUP list at this point?  So no, if I understand the rules correctly, Brockel can not go on PUP.  Here's what Wikipedia says:

Preseason PUP

A player who, as a result of football-related injuries, is unable to take part in training camp practices may be assigned to the preseason PUP list. Players can be moved off the PUP list to the active roster at any time, even after one practice. A player cannot be placed on the PUP list, however, once he has taken the field for a practice, even if only for a few minutes.

Regular-season PUP

A player who finishes the preseason still on the PUP list can then be placed on the regular-season PUP list. Such players must sit out the first six games their team plays. At that point, teams have a five-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional 21-day window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season.[1]

Brokel is regarded as a good special teamer though...a good one on a weak special teams unit.

I do wish we could get Colin back to playing full time at special teams this year.

I've seen nothing special from him on special teams in 2 years. That must be coach speak "he's a good special team player" for them to try and rationalize why they've kept him on roster. He was depth when we didn't have any.  Now we have players that  really provide depth and playmaking abilities.

Hate it for Brockel if he is injured  but at least this  might keep Ron from letting a young player go he shouldn't.
