How safe is Tolbert?

I asked Voth if Brockel was a cut candidate last night, his response:

So if Brockel making the team is 'fate accompli' why the hell did they even sign Ward and give him reps in the preseason? If he has no shot no matter how much better he is than Brockel, why are you wasting his time?

It's the boss interviewing for a job opening even though he's already promised the job to his dumbass son in law.

You have no argument at all. We use Tolbert as a RB, I use his rushing stats. You go far away from the topic and start talking about Guards running the ball. Oh, and it's funny you bring up John Kuhn (a REAL FB). You are trying to be witty, but John Kuhn actually had a better YPC than Tolbert, more TD's than Tolbert, all while being first team all pro as a TRUE FB.

I stand by my claim. Tolbert is on the decline and it would be a shame that we pass up on young potential to keep a big RB past his prime that will continue to decline from here.

.

1. Kuhne played the whole season. 2. We use Tolbert as a fullback any time we don't hand him the ball. And I'd venture to say that less than half of his snaps included carries. Can we get the stats on this?

We won 7 of the 10 games (incl postseason) in which Tolbert played.  We won 1 of 8 games in which he was absent.  It is a pretty striking difference and one which would be interesting to try and figure out exactly what he brought to the game.  It's not super obvious in terms of statistical production.  It must be something else.

O-line was pretty much the same. We just stopped shuffling when Tolbert came back. Same Cam, same Stew.

Tolbert is NOT our second best RB.  Damn.  His last 10 games or so have produced something like a 1.8 yard per carry average and rarely was his yardage in double digits.  How in the hell does that make him better than CAP, Todman, and Wegher?

Tolbert is probably done.  You don't carry 250 lbs on a 5'9" frame and take a beating for 10 years--Your career is probably 6-8 seasons.

Practice reps. Same reason we just signed another TE even though he's not going to make the team. You need a certain number of players at each position to take reps to evaluate the other guys.

Not saying that's Ward specifically, but that's the logic behind it, and it does make sense.

Things can get complicated in these situations.

If we cut Tolbert and Brockel, who will back up Ward at FB?

Even though Tolbert isnt a good fullback, he is probably still a good RB2, so that gives him flexibility at two postions (like Brockel, but better at both)

Also I am sure the coaches like Tolbert as a leader. I know that is cliche, but when it is 20 degrees and snowing in green bay you need high character leaders to keep the team fighting.

lol

I hope our front office looks at this in terms of balancing the present and the future.  Presently, cutting Tolbert would gain us about $2.5M in cap space but it would also remove a very good short yardage runner from the roster.  In terms of the future, this is Tolbert's last year under contract and we have a nice stable of young backs who are getting rave reviews from training camp and are backing it up on the field in preseason.

Is having Tolbert for one more season worth potentially losing one of those promising young backs?  I have a feeling we're going to keep Tolbert, try to stash Wegher on the PS and he's not going to clear waivers.

My biggest knock on Tolbert is that he's just about worthless as a blocker.  We haven't had a legit lead blocker since Hoover retired.  I'd rather role with Ward and give Stewart a legit lead blocker for what is likely his last season as a Panther.

Disclamier- I have a soft spot in my cold heart for big bruising backs ie christian okoye

Tolbert took around 5 million less to sign here, that still carries weight.

I will say some players change after getting their first big injury, shocking to me that seems to be whats happen to tolbert. I'm still a tolbert fan, just wish he was pre-injury toldozer.

Lastly his fit with current play is a issue. Panther run read option, tolbert is awful at that. He isn't a good true fullback either. In past he made up for that by being a bowling ball, along with being a above average pass catcher.

He looks in great shape too, but that will fool you sometimes.

I don't really know, where I stand with tolbert. I never overrate preseason for proven vets. It would be much Easyier if this was pre-injury 2012/3 toldozer.

If Benjamin was healthy, Tolbert was expendable...now we need Tolbert to be a blocking and screen back to chip and add time for Cam in the pocket.

Gad KB been healthy, Cam needed less time and a big target for quick passes that gets double-teamed.

weve got to get a good year from Tolbert for our offense to be successful.
