Corey Brown will be OK

Smithers

I usually don't start threads...heck I rarely post.  But I wanted to be positive about Corey Brown for a second.

Brown couldn't catch a thing last night.  His technique was terrible.  It's like he forgot everything he was ever taught.  But people seem to be forgetting one very important thing.  On all those plays that resulted in drops, Corey was open.  He was constantly beating the Dolphins starting corners and safeties and getting himself in a position to make a play on the ball.  He had great separation on several plays, especially the dropped touchdown (where he beat 3 defenders).

So sure...his drops last night were inexcusable.  But the man at least managed to get open against a formidable Dolphins secondary.  We need to cut him some slack...he went from being the 3rd or 4th WR to having to start in the # 1 spot last night.  It's not like he was plagued by drops last season.  Quite the opposite actually, as he has usually shown good hands.  Hopefully he has learned his lesson and will play much better from here on out.

So that's my positive spin on things.  I know I know...there is usually no room for positivity on The Huddle.

You can be open all day long, which he was on a couple of plays, but if you don't catch the ball it just doesn't matter.

As a fan during the preseason i don't want spin---the goal is to put your level of play above that---I want results!

He dropped 1 pass. In a meaningless preseason game. His separation the rest of his snaps more than counters the bad.

Everybody watch the play in the endzone again. The ball was tipped just before it got to him and it threw the direction off by a few inches. He saw the ball going into his hands and couldn't react fast enough to adjust and catch it. No receiver in the league could've reacted fast enough to catch that. It was a fantastic play by the defender.

Corey and Funchess will be our starters.

People can't even admit that the guy dropped two passes. If that doesn't tell all about the Huddle.

Ginn is actually the receiver that gets open the most. He gets more open than KB, at least he has in the past.  The jury is still out on Funchess.

If he had been plagued by drops last season than I would understand the hate.  But he hasn't, and he has shown that he understands the route tree and what it takes from a technical standpoint to get open.  He has the ability to get open on every play.  Corey will start for us this year and see a lot of action.  And he will catch most balls thrown his way.

My original post used the word "drops,"  That word is plural, meaning more than 1.  So yes, I admitted that he dropped multiple balls last night.  That is besides the point of my post though.

You guys act like they were perfect passes that were thrown to him and he just decided "gee I just feel like dropping it right now". One was behind him and at his waist that he had to dive for. The other was a deflection right when he was about to catch it. The huddle just needs to calm their tits.

Well, it wasn't like he was spot-on last year. He did have some drops. And keep telling yourself that he is going to start when others like our very own Igo and Bill Voth are telling you that Brown has fallen back to the pack.  Perhaps he will start, but he had better show up on Friday.

Why do you guys even care so much? You go out of your way to defend Corey Brown's screw-ups, but you seem to give two shits about Boykin's great game, and MiKe Brown's great game, and Byrd's solid performance during a couple of games.

I just don't get it.

Um....In Igo's latest roster projection I was the first to say that he got it wrong and that Boykin would have a roster spot.  He argued with me and said that Boykin is another Cotchery and Bersin and offered nothing different than those two.  Then Boykin showed out last night, as I thought he would, and everyone is talking about him.

Look, I am not defending anyone.  All I did was start a thread to point out something that has not been mentioned yet...that at least Brown was creating separation and getting open against the Dolphins starters.  That in itself is promising, since there were too many games last season where no one on our roster could get open.

Address me directly. I wish I was face to face with you so we could have this discussion. And I wish we could have the film on a screen right in front of us as well. I will admit when a player does poorly, even if it's a player I've been supporting. And Corey had a poor game against the Dolphins. But the play in the endzone was not a drop. That I am adamant about. Maybe there was another drop he had that I don't remember (I know that first one on 3rd down, but can't remember if there was another or not) so if there was let me know and I'll admit I was wrong. But the one in the endzone was tipped.

And in response to your other post, he didn't have many drops last year at all. He body-catches a lot and that's not good, but he didn't struggle with drops last year. Igo and Voth don't know sh*t about what the depth chart will be. They're going off of what they saw in that preseason game, without watching extensive film because they aren't analysts. They aren't hearing any inside info about "oh Corey's going to be cut, oh Boykin is a starter, oh blah blah blah blah blah." They are just observing things. Corey was miles ahead of Boykin the entire preseason according to those 2 as well and 1 preseason game, no matter how bad, won't change that at all.

I care because I know I'm right based on what I saw. Whoever is better than so be it, and if Boykin magically becomes our starter and puts up 1500 then great, I'll admit I was wrong and be happy with production. But until I see anything different than what I've maintained, I will continue to support the notion that Corey will be our starter. It's got nothing to do with liking him better than Boykin or some nonsense like that. I've watched the film and it don't lie. Maybe my eyes do at this stage but that's another story...

He catches it like a beach ball and always has. He can get away w his speed and diving using his body to trap balls into his arms..

But still don't see crisp smoothness like Byrd has. Corey has more NFL games and has the ego on his side which is needed. Hope Brown makes some big yard catches.. I agree he will be ok. He won't be a Ocho Cinco though

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
