Panthers, Pack, & the difference in reactions to the injury of a WR1

"invest" doesn't just mean draft picks.

Furthermore, I still contend Funchess wasn't the guy we should have traded up for if we found it necessary to do so.  Also, had we not drafted Shaq, we wouldn't have felt compelled to reach for Funchess.

But, I hope I'm wrong about those first two picks.

I assure you that you are. But hey, in a world where depth, the future and a salary cap doesn't exist I'm sure we can all agree that the huddle's drafts and FA acquisitions would be better than DGs.

And yet, there are so many who claim to understand all of the intricacies of those things but, believe that it completely restricted us from doing anything to upgrade the position thoroughly, which is equally naive and fantastically ignorant.

People saying all these things about about the gm and stuff.. its really because they have arguably the best qb in the NFL. I mean if we had that group of receiver/tight end combo it still wouldnt look too good. Rodgers is just a far better passer than Cam. And dont get me wrong i love Cam, but yall kidding yourselves if you think he's close to the passer rodgers is.

We won't know until he is given a comparable amount of talent around him.  Rodgers has never had a WR corps half as bad as ours.

Come on man. Yeah that is true but regardless of the receivers, Rodgers is as fundamentally sound as they come. I love the panthers and cam as much as anybody, but Rodgers is plain and simply a better passer. His IQ and decisions is making is great, he's extremely accurate (High 60's% for the last 5 years). You're telling me that if they were placed in the same situation, you think Cam would do what Rodgers does?

I believe much more in Cam's passing ability than most.  Who knows?  Odds are he wouldn't quite match Rodgers' exact stats across the board, but I would attribute that much more to the type of offense he plays in as long as Shula is still the OC here.  The point is though, imagine how lethal our offense could be with weapons like Rodgers consistently has.

In addition to cleaning up the awful salary cap he inherited  (which was roundly believed to be the worst in the NFL going into 2013), Gettleman teams have won the division in consecutive years despite major roster turnover and limited FA (and that's putting it nicely) FA spending for the first time in Division history .

The offensive line looks to be better than it has in years. Running backs look reloaded (and maybe better) than last year after shedding DeAngelo'so ridiculous contract. WR depth was the best coming into camp this year than it has been since 2008. We are one of the few teams in the league who has had a capable backup QB.

The KB injury hurts bad, but it is sheer bad luck. And while the national media has downplayed it, Packers fans are as devastated by losing Nelson as we were with KB. Nelson was Rodgers favorite receiver.

How much better really is the talent level of GBs receiving corps than ours? No doubt some, but IMO the difference in offensive scheme is by far the biggest differential.

Blaming Gettleman for anything right now is crazy to me. He hasn't neglected anything, especially at receiver. 2 of his 3 top picks the last 2 years were for WR.

The only logical reasons for hating on Gettleman given what he has done in 2 seasons are being butthurt over Smitty or just wanting to complain about something.

We have a segment of our fanbase who refuses to see or is too stupid to understand how significant what he has done.

True the OC is as big as any other factor for why Cam has been held down. Well hopefully next year we'll know. Oline will have played together for an entire year and most of them for 2 years, and solid receivers. Would be icing on the cake if we got a real OC.

this offseason alone he signed cam to the most important contract extension in franchise history, extended our pro bowl tight end, and drafted some new pieces on offense in daryl williams and funchess.

in three years he's rebuilt the entire secondary, the offensive line, the interior of the defensive line, and was in the middle of a major overhaul of the WR corps when a freak injury struck.  when people get on their soapboxes about gettleman not addressing wide receiver depth what they really mean is that hurney didn't focus on the position enough (or didn't draft the right players) starting in like 2010 or 2011 so they'd be fully developed by 2014/15 and the corps would be filled out.

yeah maybe he hasn't overtly prioritized wide receiver like the packers and colts have,  but the offense has been invested in and if this current configuration on the OL works out like it's looking like it might then that's another feather in his cap.  outside of kalil those are all players he drafted or brought in.  now all of the sudden we're three deep at OT.  imagine that.

e: oh and i just have to mention that, for all the yelling about how the colts gave luck all the help he needed from the start, he was one of the most hit quarterbacks in the league in 2012 and 2013.

I'd say it has a lot to do with the fact that Ted Thompson has been GM of that team for ten years. And up to just a few years prior to him, Ron Wolf was in charge.

Dave Gettleman just finished his third draft, and has had to spend a significant portion of his first few years as a GM cleaning up the mess left by Marty Hurney.

The team has indeed gotten better since Gettleman took over, but to get to the level of the Packers will take more time.

As long as there's consistent progress along the way. I'm comfortable.

The Gettleman cronie right on Q, and  blaming Hurney like always. Its like Bush and Obama no matter what Obama does Bush gets the blame.

2014 draft was a perfect example of Gettleman incompetence when it comes to drafting offense. Named the deepest wide receiver class ever, a team that let go of every single receiver on theirs roster PICKS ONE, just one. When everyone and there mother knew we needed 2 or 3. Stop with the excuses already

What I would give to see Martvis Bryant or Moncrief with Kelvin. Gettleman completely shat the bed

Yeah, that would have been nice. It's the lower guys we missed out on too, like the ones the Packers got in Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis.

I would have loved to have gotten Tre Mcbride or Dezmin Lewis in this year's draft
