Panthers, Pack, & the difference in reactions to the injury of a WR1

Shaq wasn't plugging a hole. He was BPA, same as all our other picks since Gettleman took over.

We're thinking long term now. Having a guy who just made an annual practice of plugging holes was what got us into the big hole we had to climb out of.

Long-term thinking often means it takes a long time to implement, but once it's in place you have sustainable success.

Who said anything about Shaq? I am a proponent of BPA when it comes to the top picks, but I think that you can loosen up in the later rounds and try to fill a need, particularly since those picks historically are more of a crap shoot anyway,  But, that's just my own opinion.

But that's the issue Scot...  It appears that Gettleman's BPA board likely looks dramatically different from guys like Thompson's.

The difference is that Gettleman may just have an affinity for defense over offense, specifically reciever and thus, we don't invest heavily in the position.

Do you remember the Packers before Ron Wolf took over?

I can guarantee they bore no resemblance to what you see now.

The Pack has had a long time to build the team. We haven't had as long, but in the years we've had with a competent GM, we've made progress.

Imagine how much progress we could see in five to ten more years.

Responded to this...

Moreover, how many times do you need to plug up the whole at linebacker?

And honestly, even teams that draft for need in higher rounds go BPA in the later ones.

They have arguably (if u really want to) the best QB in the game and plenty of WR talent. I do think this hurts them, but they have a history of winning......we don't. That's why most wouldn't bet on us, even WITH KB. We just gotta start winning and do it consistently. Then we can have respect. Don't expect it til then tho.

In reference to your first point, I was actually thinking in lines of Chase Blackburn, A.J. Klein and David Mayo.

As for teams drafting BPA in the later rounds, that's just your perception. It's not an absolute, and there is really no way to prove it. I have heard at least one GM on TV say that he drafts BPA near the top of the draft and relaxes during the mid to late rounds and maybe will draft for need depending upon the situation.  I absolutely know that Jerry Reese said it on the Finding Giants series.

Edit: But if you want to throw in Shaq Thompson and Adarius Glanton for accuracy's sake, you can.

We should have drafted a receiver in the first last year and moved up to take one in the second round this past year.

I wouldn't say they were dramatically different.  In fact, I think their offense has remained relatively consistent in terms of philosophy and the way they were constructed.  They've always valued WRs and have often supplemented the run game with short passes instead.  Without looking, wasn't Wolf in charge there when they acquired guys like Sterling Sharpe, Robert Brooks, Antonio Freeman, etc.?

DG has done some awesome things thus far, so I'm hoping you're right.  But to this point, he has greatly neglected WR compared to positions that were already relatively strong.  I still find it mind boggling that we failed to pursue and/or sign anyone with legitimate, starting-potential during FA, considering the guys that were available and ended up signing for cheap elsewhere.

We can't complain too much because we've made the playoffs two straight seasons, but the playoffs should be the minimum expectation every season. I feel the WR position, specifically adding multiple, viable weapons for our franchise QB, is the piece that takes us from "happy to make the playoffs" to a Superbowl favorite.

"invest" doesn't just mean draft picks.

Furthermore, I still contend Funchess wasn't the guy we should have traded up for if we found it necessary to do so.  Also, had we not drafted Shaq, we wouldn't have felt compelled to reach for Funchess.

But, I hope I'm wrong about those first two picks.

Panther fans talk out of both sides of their mouths

One week ago, you all were fretting that we had too many good WR's and hated that we were gonna have to cut one of them, now...

And another thing, quit worrying about what the experts say, so far, we are proving them correct.  Our offense is making them look brilliant

Winning is the only thing that will shut them up, not the tantrums thrown on a MB.  DG has done some great things with what he has had to work with.  His draft picks are working out well, very well

Expect a slow start from the Panthers again this season, hopefully finding some continuity after the first month.  Luckily, we are not in the strongest division, although, I think the Falcons are gonna be much stronger

Oh, I'm talking before Wolf, back in the days when they were coached by guys like Bart Starr, Forrest Gregg and Lindy Infante.

The Packers were generally an afterthought in those days.
