Out with the "old". In with the new?

One of the knocks on Brown coming out was that he has small hands. The same as LaFell. I think small hands can be like not having proper technique on a jump shot: it leads to streakiness where sometimes you can catch anything and sometimes you drop everything. There's no long term consistency because of how delicate the form is. A response to small unsure hands is chest catching, which is also inconsistent.

No doubt Corey is quick, has the attitude, and is developing his strength and route running to play in the NFL, but his hands will probably hamper him from becoming a legit big time receiver for a long career.

I agree with this thread though, this looks like a year with some younger moves being made. Vets like Brockel and Tolbert could be on their way out, and honestly they probably should be. I feel bad because I feel like Tolbert is so engrained with the players that his absence would be felt and may disrupt the locker room. However, this is when a "well run organization" would release those guys -- before they start to really stink and block us from bringing up the young talent we have available. Also, not saying it's gonna happen yet, but if Kalil's injury keeps him out for some real games and Remmers fills in at Center solidly, we may be seeing the future of the O-Line when they put Williams in.

I will be specific, and I realize that i have very little to go on to make these moves--these are hunches.  However, remember last year, when this team turned it around?  Benwikere healed and took over a CB spot.  Boston found a home at S.  Turner and Norwell grabbed the reins at G.  Remmers put Chandler out of his misery.  Whittaker flashed.  Where the hell did Glanton come from?  Corey Brown provided some offensive spark.

Marty Hurney paid the veterans here to get fat and lazy (figuratively) by overpaying them and not bringing in competition.  Our depth is awesome--which is why we are winning preseason games by coming from behind in the second half.

Brockel, Tolbert, Harper, Whittaker--in my opinion--should be casualties of the roster trimming.

Brockel out, Ward in.  (watch Brockel on the 2 Tolbert goal line runs in the first half vs. Miami.  He clogs the hole on the first run and he runs by the S that stuffed Tolbert on the second run.  Watch Ward blow people out of the hole later.

Tolbert out, Wegher in.  Not the same player, but Tolbert was never a true fullback--that is why we had Brockel, another player not a true fullback.  I think it is time for a true fullback if we want to run it.  Benjamin's injury makes this more important.  Besides, RBs start declining at age 27.  Tolbert is almost 30, and he carries extra weight.  He is not getting better.

Harper out, Marlowe in.  Watch Dean Marlowe--he is a stud. His technique is not great, so I would start Coleman and bring in Marlowe to back up.  Harper is way overrated and literally looks at times as if he is avoiding contact.  Let's help him out.

Whittaker out, Todman in.  Todman is slippery and is better at special teams.  Whittaker has been a pleasant surprise, but he never took the next step.

I realize this probably ain't happenin', but an objective mind might agree.

Cotchery and Corey are not the type of WRs Cam needs for this offense. Both players don't fight for the ball well at all, and they are not sure handed.

Cotchery is sure-handed, and has been relatively sure-handed his entire career. You win some, you lose some. I don't think he has any notable problem of not wrestling for the ball, or not catching with his hands.

If you want to say he is old and slow, a shell of his former self, or that Boykin can provide the same services more efficiently and at a cheaper price, then I can't argue with you.

Edit: BTW, Cotchery had ONE drop last season.

Counting the drop against Seattle? Post the link showing he had one drop if you get a chance I want to take a look at it.

You can look at the entire season here for comparison's sake. They do have filters (just hit the white arrows).http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/drops/2014/

But Cotchery's specific page is here: http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/players/246315/jerricho-cotchery/#Receiving Yards$GameType=279588574&SeasonMax=9999&SeasonMin=1990

As much potential as I see in Wegher and Toddman, they won't see a roster spot as a result from a Tolbert cut. Im hoping we can trim the fat somewhere but it won't be from the expense of Toldozier.

Been there, done that, experienced veteran and proven commodity in all the coaches eyes. Can't say I would see it differently in their position.

exactly what does Tolbert bring to the table that can't be replaced? He had a good 2013 season as a panther, that's it. Last year he was fat and slow...not seen much different so far this year. Tolberts best years were in San diego. I would take wegher's upside over Tolberts past in a second. Last night Tolbert and  Brockel we're both weak and soft.

Can't disagree with you Billy. If it's my team I think I would find room for both of those guys. If you look at the roster though, choosing who you would shitcan and replace for young talent is about the toughest call you can make as a coach. (This year at least)

Sitting on my couch, playing Madden .. I'm picking the young bucks all day long. In reality most people go with what they know. A mans work history plays a big part into that decision. Tolbert hasn't been all world but he hasn't underperformed and as I say, he is a proven commodity for Coach here and in San Diego.

Again, if it's me.. Brockel is gone......so thats a spot for Wegher. Finding another spot for Ward would be difficult but I would do my best to make room... Just not at the expense of Tolbert.

Tolbert has one more preseason game imo to earn a place on the team. I don't think the team benefits by having his spot guaranteed regardless of production.
