NFCS roundup after week two

To win this division, our D is going to have to bring it's game. The Saints and Falcons first string offenses are looking very efficient and potent. Matt Ryan worked what is typically a stout Jets Defense and Brees just ate the NE defense. Seeing the way Tannehill worked our first stringers, I would hate to imagine what those two can do to us.

Key to winning this division is our defense.

Our starting defense looked pretty good, except on 3rd down.  We forced a 3rd down on every single set of downs I believe...but couldn't make a stop.  During the regular season, we would have blitzed on those 3rd downs rather than played a soft zone.  Remember...we just do not blitz that much during the preseason, except the 3rd game, historically.  I expect more pressure and less 3rd down conversions against NE.

@Smithers, thanks that's helpful perspective.  I was puzzled a bit by the lack of success in stopping the Dolphins on 3rd down.  Your explanation provides a little reason to be less concerned, though this is obviously still an area of needed improvement, both last week and this week.

I have not re-watched the game yet for an exact count. but we did stop them on 3rd down near their goal line and would have had a turnover on downs when they went for it on 4th but Harper got the uneccessary holding penalty. Another 3rd down stop was negated by Dwan Edwards jumping offsides as well.

3rd down on both sides of the ball were an issue last night. But preseason could very well be an explanation. This next preseason game is always the most important one. But even that isn't a true predictor of the regular season.

True, those penalties were awful.  I was so excited for the goal line stop, and then to have them get the 1st down on penalties (and the subsequent easy TD) was crushing.

You cannot gauge our defense on anything that we've seen so far and trying to do so is asinine. The key to a great defense starts with putting pressure on the QB. Kind of hard to do that with our 3 best lineman absent. Geno Smith would look good against a zone if he can sit back there for 10 seconds.

PS It's a good thing that Matt Ryan and Brees look so great in the preseason because when the division is on the line they suck balls.

This is the lamest reasoning I have ever heard. Has it even occurred to you that any of those injuries could linger on into the season? Or you think it's automatic that we have all our dline starters for the whole season?
