Instead of becoming more run heavy, just become Saints/Pats.

I'm not saying this is a good idea at all. But haven't we been discussing lately how Cam has a little more touch on his balls? What we should take from the Saints/Pats is their dink and dunk passes at certain points. We have all agreed that Ginn is used to blow by defenders and run go routes. However, why not use the speed of him, Brown, and Byrd to run crossing routes and confuse the defense? And if Cam has truly learned how not to throw a missile 100% the time maybe our speed can help the run game and we can play the ball control game we are really trying to get to.

Also, does anyone else notice we now have the exact same offense as the Seahawks? No #1 receiver. Beast of a TE and RB. Questionable offensive line. Franchise QB who just got paid. They seemed to have done alright focusing on their strengths... maybe that's not such a bad idea

we did run something of a dink and dunk ball control offense at times in 2013 and it worked reasonably well.  that was still working in more of a coryell context though.

a west coast flavor which is what OP is advocating is predicated on timing and option routes in the passing game.  there are many quarterbacks who've had solid or even great years in those systems but have gone on to flame out or be disappointments in other systems.  dalton, cassel, kevin kolb, charlie whitehurst, matt flynn, josh freeman, etc - all guys who showed out at least once in a west coast system.  cam's skill set isn't a good fit for that offense.

The philosophy of Mike Shula's offense is not wrong...the execution of Mike Shula's offense couldn't be worse. It's not about being run heavy or pass heavy, it's about being balanced and putting your players in the best position to succeed.  Shula does not do a good job with that. He lacks creativity...not meaning that he can't draw up crazy gimmick plays, it's that he doesn't understand how to make calls that will set up other plays without it being ridiculously obvious. Watching our offensive game strategy is not much different from watching high school football. It's literally, run to the right to set up a run to the left...

Let's get a few things straight:

The Saints offense doesn't suck. Not sure what numbers you're looking at, but as far as I can tell, they're still one of the top offenses in football.

The Saints have been their best in the Sean Payton era when they have a good running game.

Cam Newton is not a quarterback you want in a ball control, west coast style offense. I like Cam, but that doesn't play to his strengths

They're good for ten
