The Answer is on the Roster

Daryl Williams and CAP are giving me a lot of hope for our run game.  Even if JSTEW misses a few games, with Todman, CAP and some solid line play, we'll be able to open up passing lanes via a strong rushing attack.  I completely acknowledge KB is a HUGE loss, but all is not lost.  Olsen is a beast TE and we have some speedsters on the roster at WR.  If Funchess can be a fraction of what KB was last year, we can still be lethal.

Love the sentiment and wish I had full faith in said qb and better yet the coaching staff to put who we need to win onto the field ( and earlier than the second half of the season )

Hey, we only have so many seasons of Panthers football to watch in our lives. Why write one of these off before it ever starts. Who are we, the Browns? We made it into the play-offs last year with a frikkin' losing record. If we can do that, we can do anything!

Cry if you want to, but I won't give up until they close down the season officially. And until we get mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, I'm still pulling for us to win the Super Bowl. If you don't go into a season like that, then what the hell are you watching football for? Go play Madden.

Yeah I heard the answer for LT was on the roster last year as well.   It's good to be optimistic but we need to also be realistic and get ready.  Stewart will get hurt, it's not a IF it's a WHEN at this point, hopefully it's only a few games.  We have question marks behind him.  We have question marks at LT.  Our two DT's and best DE are banged up, Funchess pulled a hammy, Tillman is another not IF  but WHEN injury as well.   We can still win this division, but as long as we're down talent and have Shula and Rivera as game-day coaches, we're going to get outsmarted and outclassed by better coached teams.    We can still be optimistic and hope people step up, but after the Bell/Chandler nonsense last year, we should curb our expectations.

you don't allow anything outsie of negativity into your outlook.

It wont be like that.

Alot of people forget that Benjamin overachieved last year.

I know it is long odds, but Funchess could come out on fire and make some plays his rookie year, just like KB did last year in his rookie season.

Plus Funchess has a better supporting cast than KB had, we have a better o-line and Cam is healthy.

no no no, season over man.

A hard nosed running attack with play action passing will not be competitive in the NFL today. A team needs a passing attack that can put up 14 points quickly through the air early or late in a game to be competitive with the best teams in the NFL.

The rules greatly favor an offense that passes more than 55% of the time with a spread formation and horizontal passing attack.

Personally, I do not like it, but those are the facts. There is a reason the traditional TE is no longer utilized on the successful teams, and the fullback position is dead.

yeah because Seattle runs the ball more than they pass and look how well they did last year. They weren't successful at all.

What? You say they made it to the superbowl with a strong defense and rushing attack. But they were just lucky one year right?

What? You said they went to the Superbowl 2: years in a row with the same formula?  Oh well then never mind........

And then you realize Wilson ran from the spread formation during a pass play how many times?

The Seahawks had 3 RBs carry the ball on the season for a total of 389 carries out of 1021 total plays. What percentage would that be? In the playoffs their RBs ran for 42% of the plays.

They beat the Panthers with the passing game, they beat the Packers with the passing game, and they almost beat the Patriots with the passing game. It sure was not the running game that sealed those victories. The Seahawks called more passing plays and ran more spread formation than any other formation. A majority of Lynch's runs come out of 3+ receiver sets.

That is their offensive formula. The Seahawks do not rely on a power running game with play action.

First of all you dont ignore Wilson's runs just like you dont ignore Newton's runs as part of the running game unless you want to change the facts to suit your argument.  Seattle ran the ball 525 times out of a total of 1021 plays for a run percentage of 52% which is what I said.  They run the ball more then they pass.

Secondly they absolutely use play action all the time.  Here is an article discussing it.

This was analysing the 2013  season but it noted that Seattle led the league in play action while we were 4th.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/2013-play-action-offense

As for the spread versus other offenses, all teams run versions of the spread as well as several other offenses so saying that a team is a spread offense when talking about most any team besides Philadelphia is not very accurate. Here is an article that might help explain to you why Seattle utilizes a power run game but does so often out of the one back set and how that compares to traditional power running schemes. The modern day power running game uses a lot more deception  and multiple sets than in the past but it is still considered a power running game.

 http://www.fieldgulls.com/2012/12/27/3808788/an-old-favorite-returns-to-the-seahawks-offense

So the reality is that absolutely Seattle uses play action and a power running game to match their strong defense.  That is their offensive formula and it is exactly what we are going to try to do this year as well.

That's real swell and all but Seattle is an outlier offensively and an elite NFL team. Carolina is neither.

I dont know what an outlier is in football frankly given that every team runs multiple offensive schemes and even teams like New England who most folks think pass all the time still run the ball over 40% of the time.  We are very similar to Seattle and while we havent had the same success we use a similar formula and hopefully will have similar success this year.  We have been in cap hell the last few years which they have not but might be soon.  So dont be surprised if the worm turns and they fade while we start to surge.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
