Let's put the Cotchery has little value takes to rest

Think about this for a moment.

Remember Tiquan Underwood, who didn't even make it past training camp with us last year?

He had a better season statistically in 2013 with Mike Glennon throwing him the ball than Jerricho Cotchery did for us last year.

Underwood: 12 games, 24 receptions, 440 yards, 18.3 average, 4 touchdowns.

Cotchery: 15 games, 48 receptions, 580 yards, 12.1 average, 1 touchdown.

By the way, Underwood is now playing in the CFL.

So yeah, let's hear some more about Cotchery's value.

OK, here's some more. Cotchery had more receptions and more yardage than Underwood, as he did in '13 with the Steelers, and with 10 TDs. So not only are you cherry picking your stats, but comparing these two guys is apples and oranges. Underwood is speed and Cotchery is possession.

his fug-ups stand out to me as coming at the worst possible moments. dropping that touchdown against the bengals, pulling up on his route against the cardinals, even dropping that third-down pass on our opening drive against seattle in the playoffs.

all the leadership in the world doesn't stand for poo if you're not backing it up on the field making the few plays you're supposed to make.

Thanks for that in depth rebuttal.

I can only explain how Cotchery was essentially being used incorrectly in order to steer us clear of cap hell in so many ways.  It's pretty obvious that your level of expectations for Cotch last season was unrealistic.  Gman's all-encompassing vision was/is a little more broad.

Overall, it's about scoring points, whether he be a possession receiver, or a speed guy. 1 touchdown in 17 games is just bad. There's no way around it.

Actually, when considering Cotchery's season with the Steelers in 2013, it only makes his 2014 season with us look even worse. He clearly regressed. His touchdowns in Pittsburgh were inflated a bit, few people realistically expected him to come in, and put up 10 touchdowns. But we certainly expected more than 1 terrible drop that nearly cost us our season, and only 1 touchdown.

He has value in the film room as we all know. Where people sleep on him, is the fact he truly is a savvy vet on the field. He's not a big playmaker, however he is a safety valve and did get open consistently on shorter routes. Not going to show up on the stat board but he does know how to get open fast and that can be the difference in a small gain vs a sack, especially against the blitz

There just has to be some other reason for not liking him. If you judged other players on 2 mistakes we'd have to replace the entire roster. Hes not even in the top 400 receivers in drops last year and Benjamin was number 1. Would you react do harshly to an interception or fumble costing a game as that happens here too.

By the way. Cotchery was 1st on the team in YAC among WRs to dispell another myth.

I think we actualuly keep 7 WRs and Cotchery doesn't make it. We will go with youth. There is enough leadership on the team with Proehl as the coach I'm not worried about a "veteran presence"

  • KB- Obvious #1
  • Philly - Has proven he can do and will hopefully grow from last season
  • Funchess - Traded up for him. Big target with big play potential. Will take defenders off of KB
  • Ginn - Our veteran receiver has big play potential and will also be our punt returner
  • Bersin - For some reason fans are against Sunshine and I can't figure that one out. He has worked his freaking tail off and all he does his catch passes. Another big guy that cam loves to throw to. When not catching he is blocking hard every play
  • Boykin - I really like everything I have seen and heard about him. He seems to catch everything
  • Byrd - The only reason I say we keep him is because you can't coach speed and there are so many different things you can do with a guy that fast. He has shown to be able to catch the ball too and I see him as our future punt returner. Ginn has taken him under his wings. Let him learn from Ginn for a couple years and hand the reigns over

Not saying we keep 7, but coach has made it clear that its possible. If we do, it has to be this group. Cotchery doesn't provide us with much. I just don't see the point in keeping him. And I have been his biggest supporter. Just time to let the youth shine

Yeah, let's poo on our #1 WR who came into a completely gutted WR core as a rookie, and put up 1,000+ yards, and 10+ touchdowns, and instead defend the "veteran" WR who managed 1 touchdown in 17 games.

That is laughable.

By the way, KB shared the most drops with Demaryius Thomas, a 6 year veteran who also happens to be one of the top WR's in the NFL.

As for YAC, Greg Olsen led the team last year.

Like Harper, he's old and slow and cramping the 'future' I guess.

I wouldn't mind 7 but I doubt it'll happen, and whether it's 6 or 7, I think Cotchery makes the team.

in fairness to cotchery he's misused by shula. he should be playing the flanker or running the occasional route out of the slot as a possession receiver, not running bubble screens and go routes.
