it doesn't matter if dave gettleman brings a lombardi to charlotte.  he's the devil in the eyes of a lot of people for releasing steve smith.

That's true. You should have seen some of the Facebook comments people were making in the Steve Smith retirement articles about Gettleman. After getting us out of cap hell and drafting well for 3 years...people only associate him as the guy that cut the legendary Steve Smith. If we win the Lombardi, people will complain because it should have been Smitty hoisting it in Panther blue.

yeah i was mostly thinking of the casual fan reaction to it.  hurney restructured his deal in 2012 and sprayed prorated money all over the back end of his contract.  he would have carried a cap charge of at least $6 million even if he would have retired after 2014 like he said he would.  really though i think he would have hemmed and hawed about retirement all summer and played chicken with the panthers like favre did after 2007.

honestly when gettleman told us it would take three years to clean up hurney's shitshow i didn't expect that to mean back to back division titles.

While KB has a ways to go, if you don't see a bit of smitty in his play when he makes a big catch or gets a big score...then you have your blinder's on.  We have guys with their own fire and swagger, but also they are TEAM players.  Steve was the original, but he is gone. done. over.  Focus on the new gen that is here, KB and DF.  They are what will help bring us to the promise land, not Smitty anymore.
