madden has nothing to do with professional sports. It just allows people,with no athletic ability to think they are playing football by twitching their thumbs. I watch every game and attend the home ones, I just don't waste my time playing video games pretending they mirror reality.

I get what you are trying to say my man but I look at it this way:

Video games are a form of entertainment. That is the bottom line. Now they are the newest form of entertainment so just like anything new, some will resist and look at it like it is strange.

I'm going on thirty next April, so I grew up with this stuff, and I certainly have seen people take it overboard, just like they do with any form of entertainment, but I find Madden, and a few other titles (mainly sports games) entertaining, because I like that I can determine the outcome.

Honestly, I got into Madden growing up during the years when the Panthers were awful, so Madden was the only time I saw them win unfortunately.

Taking it a step further, real life football is also a game; a form of entertainment: nothing more. A person's point of view determines if entertainment is a waste of time. Many argue that all entertainment is a waste of time, while many point to psychological benefits of leisure and play of all kinds. 

I'm not sure your age, and that is none of my business, but I am fully aware that in twenty or so years, there will be something new out that I will view as a waste of time, as this is certainly something we will all go through eventually.

TL;DR

Video games are entertainment just like football itself is. All entertainment can be viewed as a "waste of time", but we all get to choose which entertainment to waste our time on.
