The "four or five guys" according to Strickland article on WRs

Cotchery will only be the second on most plays if the new guys don't work out. He was brought in to be a mentor to our young receivers. Something he has done very well. If things go right this year he should never be a 1 or 2 but would be a good investment at 3 or 4. He doesn't have to be as good as Brown or even Byrd to be a lock. Because he is still a pretty reliable third down guy who isn't afraid to make the tough catch over the middle. And could be helpful in the redzone like he was for Roethlisberger in 2013

But that is all a bonus as he is already producing tangible results in helping the young guys learn to be veterans. And that is why he is a lock to make the team. So stop with the drop. It doesn't matter.....

STOP with the DROP

Yeah, and it just so happens to be the drop that cost us a .500 record.

He had 1 touchdown all year, down from 10 the year before. He was supposed to help us in the red zone.

It was a disappointing season for him. There is no way around that.

disappoint season, he had.

One play, a game doesn't hinge on.

Before dat drop, many many failed plays.

Seems to me that Ginn might play a larger part in the offense then some originally thought.

To listen to some people Brown was going to be the #3 receiver and Ginn was just going to be a PR/KR.  If Ginn does see a considerable amount of snaps on offense I am guessing they are going to cut into Browns.

To your first point, don't try and pin our missing a .500 record on Cotchery. That's just silly (as another well-known Huddler likes to say). To your second point, which kind of leads to the third, Cotchery had so many TDs in 2013 because he was playing third/fourth fiddle on Pittsburgh. The point is Cotchery never should have been relied upon as the number two guy. The only reason that he was is that Gman was trying to get us out of cap Hell. That being said, Cotchery was a stop-gap. In light of the fact that he was being relied upon as our WR2, and not as a WR3 that he probably is in reality and would ostensibly be this year provided that Funchess can develop fast enough, then to call his season disappointing---while calling for his dismissal---are a little shortsighted.

Let me ask you this.

If it were Corey Brown who dropped that game winning touchdown pass in Cincinnati, that essentially directly resulted in us being stuck with a tie game, while only adding 1 touchdown through 16 games, would you be so casually forgiving?

I was happy when we signed Jerricho, but he did not hold up his end of the bargain as we had hoped last year. He needs to amp things up this season, he's capable of a lot better than what we saw in 2014.

Strickt is right on the money here. Those 5 have always been the lead dogs with the 6th position up in the air. Right now Bersin is in command of it, but Boykin and Brown are rising. Whoever produces the most in preseason gets the jersey, as it should be.

I'm guessing you mean Boykin and Byrd. Or are you talking about Mike Brown?

Too many B names in our WR corps. We've got Benjamin, Brown, Byrd, Boykin, Bersin, another Brown, and a Browning. That's like 7 out of the 11 receivers on our roster right now whose last name starts with the letter B.

I want anybody to go back and watch the games last year and watch Cotchery and then tell me where all this consistency and productivity came from. Because last time i checked he really didnt do that much last year, the offense got better once Brown starting getting more looks. I dont really care about practice i just dont think he fits what we need on the Offense right now. If he is the third or fourth receiver like he was in Pitt then thats cool.

For all the talk about how Ginn dropped passes for us in 2013, Jerricho was even less reliable in 2014, and even dropped a game winner in Cincinnati. I don't know if he's "on the bubble" or not, but I don't know that i would call him a lock either. Cotchery will likely only be around one more season anyway, so if it comes down to letting go of a promising younger WR, or Cotchery, I think you can figure out the outcome on your own.

This is hilariously not true.  That game winning TD Cotch dropped in Cinci?  That was his only drop on the season. Check here if you don't believe me. http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/drops/2014/

The entire offense suffered last season for various reasons,  one of them being that it was young and inexperienced.  Cotchery was put in the position of playing a 2 for most of the season,  when he should have been a 3. Still,  the fact remains that he accounted for 580 yards of offense and caught 48 passes while essentially not being in the best circumstances to maximize his skill set. Yes,  he consistently caught the ball, and only dropped one pass. Take him out of the equation last year,  particularly late in the season---where you noted Brown's increased role,  but failed to mention Cotchery's steady production---we would not have made the postseason.

I probably  would not have been as forgiving,  but that's only because Brown doesn't have the body of work.  In this league, you have to earn your goodwill. Brown has little in the bank.
