With the announcement of "beta test weekends" in September I imagine a oct/nov release is about right. The beta weekends are probably their stress test and release usually isn't too far behind a stress test.

BioWare also proudly announced today that Star Wars: The Old Republic will open "Beta Test Weekends" starting this September. These weekend play sessions will be open to selected players worldwide and create an opportunity for fans to get a sneak peek of the epic stories, worlds, quests, battles and characters in the game. Please visit www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com to register for game testing and to stay tuned throughout the summer for more details as they become available.

IDK...

Star Wars is one of my favorite IPs. I wouldn't say I'm a fanatic, but I have watched the movies many times (even the new triology), own some Star Wars figures from years gone by, am actively indoctrinating my two sons into the mythos, and own or have played almost every major Star Wars video game since X-Wing in the 90s.

Yet, my interest in this MMO is very... very... slight.

I guess its partially because of Star Wars Galaxies. Terrible, horrible attempt at MMO'ing the Star Wars universe. I looked into it and realized it was a waste, and a black mark on the Star Wars franchise. I just don't think the franchise is MMO frendly.

I mean... how can one lightsaber be better than another? From what we've seen in the movies, they are all pretty much equally bad ass. Even the little one Yoda uses. And what hope does a Trooper character really have of being on par with a Jedi in a one-on-one combat? These are some of the reasons I didn't really like SW:KoTOR.

Part of it too is the fact that Space Combat is going to be "on rails" in SW:TOR. This is essentially making this MMO Lego Star Wars without legos and hi-res renderings instead. Not that Lego SW is bad, but I don't want to play an MMO like it's gameplay.

I'm going to wait this one out about 6 months and see how it goes. If it isn't getting rave reviews from my friends and others after that time span, I'm gonna take a pass like I did with SW:G.

From what I've read you don't replace, or at least don't have to replace, your lightsaber. You upgrade it with various mods(crystals and what not). And it's probably been mentioned in this thread but the story is set 3000 years before the movies when force users were much more common. Part of the story is that both sides are weakened from war and the standards for training to be a jedi/sith have been reduced. Your character will still be a 'hero' but no more than a smuggler or trooper will be.

The trooper class represents the elite of the elite of the republic. They aren't your run of the mill storm trooper, they're the Navy Seals of the republic.

Space combat is mostly an afterthought. It's no more than a mini-game from what I understand.

I don't think you'll get anything out of waiting on it. The story element of the game alone is definitely worth the cost of the game. It may suck as an mmo but you'll get your money's worth for sure.

I can understand if the whole thing doesn't sit well with people who are all in to the SW universe, but it seems the whole thing has been retconned so many times that you should be used to it.
