New Job Advice

I recently got a job offer at a big tech company in Austin.  The position is full time with benefits, but hourly pay.  It's a role I'm extremely overqualified for so it pays less than I'm making now.  I've had my current job for 4 years, salaried, but poor benefits ($1500 deductible on my insurance???) and I've never been promoted.  Which is why I started looking for a new job in the first place.

It's a tough choice - I'm comfortable at my current job, know it back to front, have EXTREMELY flexible hours (I basically work whenever I want), make ok money, but I won't ever move up.  I'll be in the same role unless the contract doesn't get renewed which could be next year.

Would you leave a better paying more established job for a chance at a new company, starting at the bottom of the totem pole?

Sometimes you have to take a chance in life but I agree with biscuit here.

That's why I went to the interview.  They said they really liked me and offered me the job, but the max they could go pay wise was quite a bit lower than I was expecting.  The hours suck too, starting at 7am-3pm.  Right now I go in at whenever the hell I want and leave whenever I want and make more money.  The only reason this would benefit me would be getting my foot in the door at a company making huge money right now.

Also need to look at other things.  I am not sure where you live, but assuming you live in Charlotte, Austin has a slightly higher cost of living.  So you would be making less in an area that cost more.

Plus you might have to deal with a lot of Cowboy fans.  That alone would make me say no.  :)

I don't think he would have to pay State income tax in Texas, right? So, it's possible he could break even on that front.

You might be right.  Of course, he would also have to look at other types of taxes, property sales, etc to get a truly accurate assessment.  I know that Texas imposes higher taxes on Corporations but I am not sure what their property taxes are.

If they are making huge money and they really like you, why couldn't they come up with the money to pay you? Relocating for a lower paying job doesn't seem to be a great move. Seems like you would be giving more than they are. This tips the scales in their favor. You have to get the money coming in - otherwise you may never get to the level you expect.

I should state I already live in Austin.  I wouldn't have to move or relocate.

I haven't responded to the offer sheet yet, I received it a few hours ago.  As it stands right now I think I'm going to reject it because I can't afford to take this big of a step back financially.  I might ask for more money but I'm not even sure it's worth it...

Hasn't always been this way.  Company lost a huge contract and a bunch of work with it, went through a big lawsuit, and the general feeling is they are just waiting for their contract with the state government to expire to close up.  I'm just kinda hanging on right now.
