It seems there are so many threads dedicated to predicting what is going to happen this season: who the panthers will lose to and who they will beat. It seems to be the focus of all the news shows as well. I'm no football expert. I'm just a panthers fan. But is there really any point to all this? Besides entertainment value of course. Aren't there simply too many variables? It seems to me that there is far too much variance to make any sound predictions, especially since there are only 16 games in a season. To me, this is what makes sports fun to watch, but it also means that despite all the stats, handicapping, records etc there is just no way to have any idea what's going to happen in any given game or with even any given season.

We've had a horrible preseason in terms of our record, but we've already established that there is no quantifiable correlation between a preseason record and a regular season record. So, what can we predict after seeing the preseason? Nothing more than we could before it ever happened.

Don't get me wrong, there is some predicability, but the factors that we can identify that may help us to predict who is going to win a game and who isn't are usually far overshadowed by all the factors we can't account for.

It's all just speculation at best, which is good news for us right now-since obviously we don't want this trend to carry over into the regular season.

very true. i find it hilarious when somebody posts the actual SCORE of a game as a prediction, and even more so predicting exactly how many yards key players get. Sure, it's all fun and games and it can be fun, but good lord, do people not get that you simply can't predict these things? There's a random factor, and much of it is the luck you speak of. Good post.

      Before the draft, Panthers G.M. Dan Morgan was vague when asked about the future of edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney. After the draft, a report emerged that the Panthers engaged in pre-draft conversations about possibly trading Clowney. It was no shock, then, when the Panthers moved on from Clowney, on Thursday. In eleven NFL seasons, Clowney (the first overall pick in 2014) has played for the Texans, Seahawks, Titans, Browns, Ravens, and Panthers. He fully intends to keep going. “I’m definitely gonna play well,” Clowney told Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com. “You can mark my word on that. I don’t care where I end up playing at, I’m gonna play extremely well.” Clowney seemed to disagree with the Panthers’ decision to part ways. “I think I played well for Carolina [last] year, considering the circumstances that . . . unfolded for me,” Clowney said. “I played with a bunch of guys that was hurt this past year. And I ended up playing extremely well for them. So it is what it is. I can play the game. I can play football. There are 31 other teams. I just hope another team gives me that opportunity so I can prove myself again. I feel like I can do that.” “I got a sense then they wanted me out of the building,” Clowney said. “I was just like, ‘Y’all could’ve told me this back when I was coming in here during the offseason.’ I kind of had a sense, though. I’ve been around the game long enough to know, so I was OK.”
