Around the NFL

So with Panthers camp upon us, it's time to put up another thread for news items from around the NFL.

Starting with...

Jake Long is reportedly visiting the Giants today. Speculation that he would be signed by the Falcons hasn't panned out...yet.

Word also that former Colts OL Gosder Cherilus is visiting the Bills (who just cut Chris Williams).

Via the Falcaholics, news that the Falcons have PASSED on Jake Long, but instead have signed Demarcus Love

http://www.thefalcoholic.com/2015/7/29/9069443/falcons-sign-offensive-lineman-demarcus-love-pass-on-jake-long

I only skimmed the article, but this makes me feel a little better about our signings yesterday.  Suggests the OT market really is very thin at the moment.  The Falcons signed someone pretty similar (little experience, bounced around a few teams) to who we just signed.

Some Bucs roster moves, including signing a former Panther PS member:

http://www.bucsnation.com/2015/7/29/9069885/buccaneers-make-five-roster-moves-as-team-heads-to-training-camp

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made five roster moves ahead of the real start of training camp on Friday. The team signed cornerback Jude Adjei-Barimah, first reported by the Tampa Bay Times, safety Kimario McFadden and cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz.

The two cornerbacks are both undrafted free agents, and both of them have pretty good size for cornerbacks. Adjei-Barimah is 5'11", 200 lbs. while Shabazz is 6'2", 185 lbs. Both of them had a slew of tackles in college, which suggests some physicality and the possibility of moving to slot cornerback.

Meanwhile, McFadden was an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina last year, spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Bucs as a practice squad player, and he's now back in Tampa. The 5'11", 197 lbs. safety should compete for a spot on the practice squad.

    • I would understand it--especially if DJ Johnson, Barno, and Wonnum finish strong.  Graham, however, might not be the best fit for Carolina with Brown back.  Our DTs have underperformed (Tuttle, Robinson) and they can be cut and save about $13m, or one can be cut and save $6.5m.  Who might be a better fit than Graham?   Maybe the guy beside him--Graham's sidekick, Kenneth Grant, is also a beast.  You could argue that he benefited by playing with Graham, just as he would in Carolina beside Brown.  However, teams like to double the big NT/3 tech, and if you do that, you get Browned.  Grant is a 340 lb DT who has 3 sacks this year--against Ohio State, Saturday, he had 5 QB pressures--and he has been doing that all year.  They could not block him.  If you want a player who compliments Brown (as opposed to rotating in with him) I would take a long look at Grant--in round two if he is there--after drafting an Edge in round 1.  In my view, THAT would solve the running game issues and give us pocket collapsing pressure up the A gap.  There is also a DT from Kentucky I like in this role, but Graham is good.
    • He is a free agent after this season. Do you want to pay him like a top kicker?  He can't kick much from past 50 yards.
    • I don't know how anybody watches this team this season and has this take.  We are miles better than we were week 1.    If we were slightly better he would be in serious contention for coach of the year, and he should be. My only concern right now is that we win too much and lose draft position to get even better.
